I have had a similar issue and here is the solution that works for me that I have just done today

 

In the directory C:swsetup delete the two directories  HPSA and SP64126 (this is the number of the HP support assistant for my notebook) Then download SP64126 from the HP site and run it. All should then work OK

Thanks for the info on getting the hp support assistant to work....all the info you suggested in your answer (7-29-2014) to why the hp support assistant does not work, did in fact make everything just perfect...thank you again....you are in fact
