I downloaded the latest Support Assistant because my old one kept crashing. I uninstalled the old one and added the new only to have the new one crash as well.

You may have corrupted common library files used by HP. You may have other HP installed programs that will misbehave also.
Run the system file checker. Instructions can be found here.
If this action fails you have other options. To help you further I need to know what operating system (Win 7, Vista, Win 8) you are using.

My mistake. I let the software emove the old Support Assistant.I went back and remove it from "Programs and Features" and tn downloaded the new Support Assistant, as you had originally instructed me to do. It worked very well. Typical male.
