I need to boot my HP Probook 4430s via USB Flash Drive. When I go to the BIOS configuration menu, it only shows "USB Floppy", "USB CD ROM" and "USB Hard Drive". However, I want to boot it through a USB Flash Drive. How do I get the option?

(I also updated my BIOS, but still I don't see a USB flash drive option)

Please help.

Thanks a lot.

Assuming the USB flash drive is made bootable, the device would mimic a bootable CD/DVD or hard drive.  Try either one of those options to see if it works.  I cannot see any harm would come of the attempt.

I tried booting from USB CD ROM and USB Hard Drive, on both occasions there was a 2 minute pause followed by this message:

"Please remove disc drives or any other media.

Press any key to restart"

Then, of course, it booted Windows.

I also tried from USB floppy but no good. What can I do?

(I have mutliple problems because my laptop cannot read any CD's/DVD's other than movie/song discs for some reason. All my drivers are updated, but still the laptop is unable to read the discs)

My basic motive was to install Pinguy OS (a linux distro based on Ubuntu) but I'm not able to use a DVD or a USB flash drive because of the problems I'm facing with my Probook 4430s.

And yes, I've made the USB flash drive bootable.

Thankyou for replying...

Well, I would verify that the USB flash drive will boot on another computer.  If that works, then the next step would be to try an external CD/DVD drive via USB with a bootable CD or a live Linux OS.  Of course the Recovery Manager may restore everything if that option is considered ( press F11 during the BIOS screen splash until the recovery startes)  If that does not work, then punt that ProBook or take/mail it to a HP repair depot.
