My HP Pavilion dv4t-1400 won't detect/play any CD or DVDs

I have windows 7 and have run HP Support assistant multiple times, and have updated all drivers I can think of, yet none of my DVDs or CDs are detected, can be played, and no CDs can be burned.  Please help!  Thank you!

Re: My HP Pavilion dv4t-1400 won't detect/play any CD or DVDs

Hi,

Tap away at f10 as you start the notebook to enter the bios menu.  Does the CD/DVD drive show up in the list of bootable devices?

Regards,

Yes, the internal and regular DVD/CD driver shows up in the BIOS in 2nd and 4th position respectively.

Re: My HP Pavilion dv4t-1400 won't detect/play any CD or DVDs

Hi,

First, try the automated fixit from Microsoft on the link below.

Windows 7

Check if the drive is now working.

If the drive is not working, from the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and click on Device Manager.  Next click to open DVD/CD-ROM Drives.  Right click the drive and select uninstall.  Do not delete drivers if asked.  When the device has uninstalled click on the 'Scan for Hardware Changes' icon ( usually just below Help on the toolbar ).  Let windows reinstall the drive and see if it now works.

Regards,

Re: My HP Pavilion dv4t-1400 won't detect/play any CD or DVDs

Hello!

Thanks for your response.  I tried both those options, and it still doesn't work.  The "fix it" tells me "the disc is not recognized by the drive.  The disc might be damaged, inserted upside down, or have an unsupported format" for every single DVD / CD I have tried.  Any other suggestions?

Re: My HP Pavilion dv4t-1400 won't detect/play any CD or DVDs

Hi,

When you carry out the procedure below, does the drive get re-detected by Windows correctly?  Are there any error icons against the entry for the drive?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Re: My HP Pavilion dv4t-1400 won't detect/play any CD or DVDs

Hi,

From the Start Menu, open All Programs, open Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'.  In to the prompt type the following command and hit enter.

sfc /scannow                 ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )

Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter.  Restart the PC and chech the drive.

Regards,

Re: My HP Pavilion dv4t-1400 won't detect/play any CD or DVDs

Hmm..thanks!  now, my DVD player reads only old data and DVDs... but it won't play any new data or videos / DVDs... I have the most up to date driver for the DVD/CD on my computer (my computer is ~ 1.5 years old).  do you think this is a software problem and i need to get a new program/driver of some kind?  Thank you so much for your help. :smileyhappy:

Re: My HP Pavilion dv4t-1400 won't detect/play any CD or DVDs

Hi,

The windows operating system actually supplies the driver for all CD/DVD drives, so there's no update as such.  Now your drive can recognise older DVDs, try running the Microsoft fixit again - linked below

Windows 7
