Unable to Play Blu-Ray Disk on HP Pavilion Elite HPE

Hello,

I have an HP Pavilion Elite HPE-210y (product number BK170AA-ABA) running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (build number 7600, DirectX version 11).  The monitor is HP w2338h, with an HDMI cable.  The disk drive is "Multimedia Optical Drive"; I could not find a number, but it has the "Blu-ray Disc" logo on the front.

I have thoroughly checked recent posts to the HP Support Forum (as well as elsewhere on the internet) to find information on how to play Blu-Ray disks.  Following one solution that worked for a couple of users, I uninstalled the HP MediaSmart DVD software (actually TouchSmart DVD) and installed Cyberlink PowerDVD 10.

I am trying to play the Lord of the Rings extended edition boxed set.  When I put in a disk, it opens PowerDVD10 and loads the disk.  Then, it gives me the message: "This content doesn't support the use of a mouse.  Would you like to enable CyberLink PowerDVD Mouse Solution?"  Answering "Yes" or "No" does not seem to affect what happens next.  It seems to be trying to play the disk.  A thin blue bar at the bottom repeatedly starts filling in, and a timer at the right goes from "0:00:00" to "0:00:01" or sometimes "0:00:02," then back to "0:00:00."  At the same time, the blue bar gets to about 1/4 full, then goes back.  This pattern repeats indefinitely, and the disk does not begin to play.

I would very much appreciate any advice about this.

Biff

Re: Unable to Play Blu-Ray Disk on HP Pavilion Elite HPE

Hi Biff,

Try the Cyberlink Blu-Ray and 3D advisor.  Be sure to run both tests and also look at the results for both Basic and Advanced.  Post your results.

Try a known good commerical Blu-Ray DVD.

Re: Unable to Play Blu-Ray Disk on HP Pavilion Elite HPE

Hi Big_Dave,

Thanks for the advice.

Under Basic, it shows "Pass" for "BD Ready?" on all lines.

Under Advanced, it shows "Pass" for all lines except the following:

Hardware Dual-Video Decoding Capability for H.264: 1080p+480iUpgrade

Hardware Dual-Video Decoding Capability for MPEG-2: 1080p+480iUpgrade

Hardware Dual-Video Decoding Capability for VC-1: 1080p+480iUpgrade

Hi Biff,

When I run the tool I get the following:

BD advanced pass.jpg

BD Advanced.jpg

If you are trying to play or use the Extended Features DVD or BD-live then your application needs upgrading. The internet interaction features obliviously require an internet connection.

Re: Unable to Play Blu-Ray Disk on HP Pavilion Elite HPE

Hi Big_Dave,

In my test it says "Pass" for Network Capability, so that doesn't seem to be the problem.  Where I don't pass is for "Hardware Dual-Video Decoding Capability."  From the Advisor's notes, it seems that this means I should upgrade my graphics card.  From the description of my problem, do you think this is the case?  If so, do you know what the card should be upgraded to in order to ensure that Blu-Ray will play?

Hi,

There are multiple versions of PowerDVD 10.  I suggest that you contact Cyberlink.
