how to access windows 8 bios

h8-1414 with windows 8 pre-installed

Need to set up a Kingston SSD and need to run Acronis software by booting the computer from a CD.

Need to access bios to tell computer to boot from CD.

Tried to access BIOS by pressing F10 on startup, but this does not work.

Also tried using

Settings
     Change PC Settings
        General
          Advanced startup
             Restart
                Use a device
                   USB floppy/CD

Neither method works  It just boots up into windows.

Re: how to access windows 8 bios

It is tricky to access the BIOS in Win8 because of how quickly it boots from hybrid sleep. Try performing a full shut down first. In the Charms bar, click Settings, click Power, and then hold down the Shift key and click Shut down. Allow the computer to shut down fully, then when you turn it on, try tapping f10 again. I hope this method works for you.

Re: how to access windows 8 bios

PeaceLily,

Thank you for your reply, but I could not get this to work !

I can only tap F10 at 10 Hz :smileyfrustrated:

Just kidding. I was tapping faster than once/second, though.

Re: how to access windows 8 bios

Darn, I'm sorry to hear that. This is the only way I know how to get into BIOS. Maybe give it a few more tries? Make sure you start tapping f10 really early on--as soon as you hit the power button start tapping.

Hi,

Be sure to burn a set of the HP recovery Disks.

Unplug the PC and hold down the power button for 60 seconds. Plug the PC back and power it up. Next try rapidly tapping the ESC key after powering on the PC to bring up the Startup menu.

Your PC might be in UEFI mode so check with Acronis and see if UEFI is support with your CD.

If your PC is in UEFI mode then you could try Legacy mode.  If secure boot is enabled then you might have additional issues. That might need to be disabled before Acronis will perform a good image copy.

Re: how to access windows 8 bios

Please post back if you are successful with Acronis and UEFI and SSD. If you have trouble, see here http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Hardware/Upgrade-to-SSD/m-p/2304061#M58781

I would also suggest to disable hibernation in Power Settings for Win8; without it you should have no trouble pressing ESC or F10 during start up.

Re: how to access windows 8 bios

Hi all,

Thanks for trying to help.  I tried each suggestion a number of times, but no luck.

What is "Legacy Mode"  ?

Next I will attempt to use the FORCE while facing Redmond, Washington.:smileyvery-happy:

Hi,

If you can tap the ESC key a 250 strokes per second then you may get lucky.:smileysurprised:

Try this posted internet article on how to access Windows 8 UEFI bios.

As previously suggested, check with Acronis to be sure that their product will work in UEFI mode.
