hp 802.11b/g wireless network adapter driver not compatible windows 8?

I've upgrade my HP Pavilion Desktop pc from windows 7 to windows 8. All drivers are working fine except the 'hp 802.11b/g wireless network adapter'.

Devicemanagement in Windows tells me that the device cannot be started. Also after deleting the drivers and reinstalling it it still does not work.

I would love to be able to add my desktop PC to my wireless network, because now i have to switch the LAN cable with my Xbox all the time. Any idea if there is/will be a compatible driver for windows 8?

Re: hp 802.11b/g wireless network adapter driver not compatible windows 8?

Hi,

Please post the HP product number for your PC.

Here is how to find a device driver based on the hardware ID.

  1. Open Device Manager (Control Panel-->System-->Hardware-->Device Manager)
  2. The hardware whose drivers are missing will appear as Unknown device, so it's easier to locate the device.
  3. Right click on the unknown device and click on Properties.
  4. Under the Properties window click on Details tab and select Device Instance Id from the drop down box.
  5. You should see a code similar to this: PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_27DC&SUBSYS_30868086&REV_01\4&1E46F438&0&40F0
  6. In the example text above the Vendor ID is in red and Device ID is in green will always be in the same place for the driver Vendor ID = 8086 and Device ID = 27DC    Your numbers will be different.
  7. Then go to www.PCIdatabase.com
  8. This may not work for all devices.

Try downloading/installing one of these drivers with the driver version 3.0.0.119. You'll need to extract the cab file first

Hi,

Try a driver from the official Atheros Wireless site which is the site that you were already at. Windows 8 drivers have not been posted but you might be able to get one of the other later released Windows 7 drivers to work.  Pick the driver appropriate for your operating system.

Re: hp 802.11b/g wireless network adapter driver not compatible windows 8?

Hi

this thread is a year old, but I have encountered the same problem today. I have have made a clean Windows 8 installation on my HP Pavilion (a6140.sc) but cannot connect to internet because the Network adapter does not work. It is named HP 802.11b/g and I have figured out that the vendor is 168C and the device is 001B an manufacturer is Qualcomm Atheros. If I am right, another name for this gear is AR5413.

Beacuse I cannot reach internet on the computer with the problem, I need to use another computer to download the driver. I would be most grateful for practical advice and detail instructions for a novice how to find and download the correct driver to put on an USB-media stick.

Thanks in advance

Hi,

Try the latest Windows 8 driver for the Atheros wireless adapter. Download it from here.  Save it to disk then copy it to the USB flash drive.

The above driver is a bit old so I don't know if HP has updated it to work for the AR5413.

I see that the Atheros AR5413 didn't make the Windows 8 hardware compatibility list.  :smileysad:

The Atheros AR5006x is the same and it is available on the Atheros web site.

You might even have to use the Windows 7 driver and manually install the driver and the ignore W8 warnings.  This might be a possibility.

Re: hp 802.11b/g wireless network adapter driver not compatible windows 8?

Hi and thank you for your reply.

I tried your first hint, the lastest win8 driver. When I ran the install wizard, I got the message " ... cannot copy file QCA/devcon.exe" and I had to cancel the operation. Don't know why.

Next I tried to download the driver for AR5006x, as you suggested. Honestly I don't understand Atheros homepage, it is very confusing. I clicked the device download button at the top of the page, chosed "interal device" and then "problem with another computer" and the Windows 7 and then Download hardware helper, and saved it on a USB-stick. Now I removed the USB-stick and inserted it into the computer with the adapter problem and double clicked on the file. This setup failed because I didn't have an internet connection. Which is the problem that I am trying to solve!  Moment 22, it seems. I couldn't understand how to just copy the Win 7 driver itself onto my USB-stick. Their home page is a catastrophy! I continued the hardware helper anyway and let it scan for outdated drivers and it found two: NVIDIA display drivers and guess what : The Qualcomm driver for the wireless netwwork adapter.

A silly question: Could one solution to my problem be to buy a USB network card, e.g. Netgear N300? They don't cost more than around 30 USD or Euros. Would that work? Are there any that would work for Win8 and my HP Pavilion a6140.sc computer? I have already spent at least 8 hours on this problem, cannot use the computer and am beging to lose all hope.

regards,

Magne

Re: hp 802.11b/g wireless network adapter driver not compatible windows 8?

Hello,

I had the exact same problem. Couldn't get the WiFi adapter working.

So I bought this USB network card you're talking about and it works perfectly fine.
