My HP Pavilion 750 with XP desktop turned off on its own and when I tried to turn it back on the next day it would not complete the boot up. I get the blue HP screen it starts to open windows in a second and makes a clicking sound and goes black except a blinking cursor line in the top left part of the screen. I can only get the BIOS utility setup to start while rebooting by pressing off. Is there a way to run system recovery to an earlier time without losing my files?? I do have the original setup software.

Fixing this is problematic if the is no WINXP CD but see this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314503/en-us
If your computer has a floppy drive, then make a bootable floppy, boot to the floppy and run fixboot, then fixmbr (of course make sure those files are on the floppy) or try: http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/
BTW: In order to run a restore for the OS restore to an earlier date, it can be done in Safe Mode but not the BIOS.
