Most RAM is "multi-speed".  Look at the tiny 'SPD' (Serial Presence Detect) chip that is much smaller than the 4 (or 😎 large memory chips.  It contains "plug-and-play" information about the RAM. For example, if you purchase 1600 Mhz RAM, the SPD will tell the motherboard that it can function at 1333 Mhz, or other slower speed(s), if need be.

So, purchase the faster RAM, and "hope" that the motherboard will support the RAM at its highest speed.

If not, the motherboard will "fall-back" to a speed that it can support.

Example of SPD:

This stick of RAM is "triple-speed".   🙂

P.S. The 32-bit version of Windows does max-out at using 3 GBytes of RAM, even when you have 4GB installed.

You need the 64-bit version of Windows if you have more than 4GB of RAM.

Hopefully, you do.  Confirm it, before buying more RAM.
