Enter BIOS SETUP, and enable "legacy" mode, instead of "UEFI" mode.

That should let you boot from "non-UEFI" media, such as media containing Linux.

Thank you for the answer. BUT, can't get into bios. F10 does nothing. Hold shift & gives me set up utilities. Go to legacy & says I have to disable secure boot before I can enable legacy.  Thanks.

Yes.  That is a different BIOS setting.

I disabled secure boot & enable legacy. The installation of linux said, complete. Reboot & goes directly into windows. My opinon it's the preinstalled OS.  HP should correct it. If I new this ahead of time I wouldn't have bought this HP computer. I hope you have more idears, thanks.

Please give us a little more information to work with.

What is the exact wording of the error-message?

Does it occur when your computer starts to read from media in the optical disk-drive? Or, later?

Which version of Linux?

Which release of that version?

Is Windows running when you insert the Linux media?
