Ok, to start with, Thanks in advance for any help!! I'm just getting my feet wet when dealing with BIOS, flashing, etc. etc. so bear with me!
I'm currently running a HP Media Center M7170N:
with 4 GB ram as the only hardware upgrade and a couple replaced DVD/burner drives.
This machine is equipped with an ASUS P5LP-LE (Lithium) Motherboard from what I can tell:
It was originally purchased with Windows XP MCE. Just recently, I updated to Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. Not thinking, I installed the OS prior to updating the BIOS. Therefore, I'm currently running the same BIOS revision that was shipped on the computer back in 2005. (I'm just now starting to get a grasp on driver/hardware updates - software updates have always been religiously maintained) When I try and install the BIOS updates available for this machine/motherboard, I get an error message: Unable to update system BIOS (1). Please try again. If error continues, contact support.
My question - Is there any way to update the BIOS of this machine, without having to reinstall XP or install Vista and then re-upgrade to Windows 7?
2nd - When I search HP for 'P5LP-LE BIOS' I get 7 available downloads - some appear to be duplicated. (see the top 7 selections)
Which of these should I be trying to update to? It appears my options are 2 revisions to be installed in XP (3.17 and 3.19) and 2 revisions to be installed in Vista (5.03 and 5.23).
The BIOS I currently have is revision 3.10 (11/23/05). I just accessed this info from the BOOT menu. When I search for the BIOS updates for my particular motherboard, I get revisions:
5.23 (05/06/08) compatible with Vista:
And when I try and run this one on Windows 7, I get an error: Your system does not meet the minimum requirements for this update. Update has been cancelled. (9998)
5.03 (10/02/07) compatible with Vista:
3.19 (10/01/07) compatible with XP:
3.17 (05/01/06) compatible with XP:
This is where I get confused on which one I should use and how I get it to work with Windows 7?
I want to make sure that when this is said and done, I have the most updated BIOS version available but not run the risk of rendering my motherboard useless. The reason I want to update my BIOS is to reap the benefits of what the updates provide, such as a lower fan RPMs and compatability issues with certain Cannon equipment, etc. I know there is sometimes there's a tendency to follow the old adage of if it isn't broke, don't fix it...
I should also mention that upon contacting ASUS – my motherboard’s manufactuer, they decline to help me as they do not provide support for components they manufacture for other companies.
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide!! (Note to Mods...this was originally posted in the laptop section by mistake...posted here in an effort to keep this in the correct section)
