there is power - the light is on at the back of the computer but the LED does not light up at the front.

The computer will not start.

I have tried using my recovery discs but nothing happens.

Hello;

Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!

If the light on the back of the PC is a small green LED, that only indicates that the Power Supply is working.

My first suggestion is that you press the Esc key repeatedly while rebooting in order to get an HP Startup Menu similar to the one below:

HP Startup Menu.jpg

When you see that, press the key indicate for running System Diagnostics.

If that doesn't indicate hardware failures, then my second suggestion is to use this interactive troubleshooter:  http://hp.dezide.com/ts/start.jsp?guide=NoPowerorBootIssues.net&section=ccweb&as=true&SFS=tdoc

Good Luck
