my laptop does unexpected shut downs very often, even though my fan is always on. i think it was a bad decision to get a HP laptop.  so dissapointed...

Google-search for "download free SPECCY".

Download, install, and run SPECCY to show the temperatures of the disk-drive, the CPU, and the motherboard.

Also, it will show the speed of the fan(s).

So, if it is "overheating" that is causing problems, you'll see the numbers.

 

Have you run a RAM test?  See: http://www.memtest.org    because bad RAM can cause "unpredictable" results.
