Best way to clean up computer files?

What is the best way to clean files off your computer that are unnecessary? I know some programs on there make the computer run. But how can I optimize my computer performance by getting rid of the junk. I seem to have several different "install" programs such as for Adobe. Do I really need to keep that laying around? Files really scare me because I know deleting one wrong even minute thing can mess you up badly.

Would the best bet be to do a disk cleanup and remove the suggested files? I'd prefer not to download anything because my main point was to remove stuff I don't need so no need to add to it. I think my computer really doesn't have too much on it

Are there anythings that come on the computer that can be removed?

Re: Best way to clean up computer files?

The best way is to download and use ccleaner.  (freeware)  Especially since you seem a bit nervous about making choices.

Since you don't want to do that, empty your recycle bin and empty your internet browser cache.  Those two things will usually give you a big jump in disk space.  As for the other possible things you have mentioned in your first post, how about a "maybe!"

If you go at it by hand, be sure to do a restore point before starting.

Hello mws_1984, This will not remove all the unwanted files but it will remove many of them.

You might try going to Start, Computer, and highlight the C: drive, right click and click on properties, select disk cleanup.

A screen will appear that shows some files being removed and then you should see another screen that shows some items that are available for removal. Check the items you would like to remove or uncheck the items you would like to leave.

Re: Best way to clean up computer files?

Thats what I ended up getting into. My computer really doesn't have too much on it anyhow. Really just a few Adobe things and Google Chrome. Just annoyed me how things were perfectly fine then I have an issue. Not getting any error messages now so maybe the problem worked itself out.
