Hi, Henrik:

Your PC's specs appear to meet all of the hardware requirements to be able to fully run W7.

The P D 915 processor is 64 bit capable.

http://ark.intel.com/products/27515/Intel-Pentium-D-Processor-915-(4M-Cache-2_80-GHz-800-MHz-FSB)

I recommend you max out your memory to 4 GB as a 64 bit operating system needs more memory to run than a 32 bit OS does.

A 32 bit OS will actually perform better on a PC that runs less than 4 GB of memory unless you need a 64 bit system to run 64 bit programs.

I would also run the W7 Upgrade Advisor to confirm what I have posted.

Best regards,

Hi Paul.
Thank you :-)

Your answer was most helpful. The W7 Upgrade Advisor will for certain be able to help me be sure before installing.

Best regards,

Henrik.

Re: Can I install Windows 7 64-bit operating system on HP Pavillion Media Center PC m7540.dk ?

I have the same question for my HP Media Center m7657C.

Will I lose functionality?

I did run the windows 7 upgrade advisor and it gave me both 32 and 64 bit responses, but nothing definitive saying I could run the 64bit.

Thanks,

Ken

Hi, Ken:

Below is the link to your system specs:

You can definitely install a 64 bit OS on your machine.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00794034&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&cc=us&dlc=en...

You have the potential to have a real nice performing PC, if you max out the memory to 8 GB if you plan on installing a 64 bit operating system.

The minimum memory requirement for a 64 bit OS is 2 GB, and I would not even consider installing a 64 bit OS with nothing less than 4 GB of memory installed.

Also looking at the specs, I can't believe HP would cripple the memory speed and only put PC2-4200 memory chips in there running at 533 MHz when the chipset supports PC2-6400 memory running at 800 MHz.

I think I am rambling too much here...anyway...

1. Don't install a 64 bit OS unless you plan to have a minimum of 4 GB of memory to run it with. A 64 bit OS requires more disk space, and more memory to run than a 32 bit OS does. You will not be happy with the performance if you ignore this recommendation.

2. Don't install a 64 bit OS if you have old 32 bit programs that work on the 32 Vista operating system like Adobe Photoshop 5 or earlier. They will not install on a 64 bit OS.

3. Don't install a 64 bit OS if you have old 16 bit programs or they won't work unless you install additional software like virtual box.

Do install a 64 bit OS if:

You have a minimum of 4 GB of memory or plan to max it out to 8 GB, as a 32 bit OS cannot use memory in excess of 4 GB.

You don't have any legacy programs from the early 2000's that only run on 32 bit operating systems.
