According to this thread: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7it
the error is caused by some drivers being replaced. The most prevalent theory to repair the error is to do an "in place repair install" that requires a real Windows 7 DVD. In the case of this forum, the OEM Recovery DVD will not give the correct result. It would be my advise that the resolution is beyond the scope of the everyday user in this forum. If you are intent on installing SP1, then find a Windows 7 DVD with the SP1 included, save the certificate and key in a safe place and all the important data on the drive and start over with a clean install. That will mean losing any programs that came with the computer ( preinstalled software included by HP ) unless the Recovery DVD set can reinstall them separately. If the "clean install" from a Recovery DVD does not solve the problem as Efroh stated, then this would be the only solution until HP issues a fix or just wait for SP2 (HaHa)

If this means it woulk work on a retail W7, I'll certainly give it a try if needed, although that's not what I been said . The W7 sp1 trial version is still around.
I choosed not to install sp1 and keep Windows Update at bay to get a descent service from the computer. I noticed the very first hp software update involved updating Windows Update and crippled the comp again. After restoring one of the two same restoring points it creates I don't know why, no more overheating and crippling.

Hi,
Try these Microsoft suggestions. It's very possible that the registry is corrupted, perhaps by a registry cleaner, and in that case I would do a full HP Recovery. Backup your data to external media before doing so.
I use several Windows 7 images and I had to do a full HP recovery on one image to get Windows 7 sp1 to install.

Neither of the two sp1 install methods would work on a worn out W7 or from first user boot restore point , and the drivers aren't those that might cause havoc. Tried also to recover from the tool disc to no avail. What you are saying is that sp1 did install on a fresh HP W7 distrib, but getting there was so long that the challlenge sounds fearsome. but still the original plan, so I'll give it a try-
I m trying to install W7SP1 because I still get many overheating shutdowns with appli that don't on WXP
SP1 still not installs on full HP recovery at first boot with or without updates
Of the 3 KB (KB2454826, KB2534366 o KB2533552) advised to install before SP1 I only found the last on WU to no avail.
Install hangs on with no process activity.
So I have exhausted the few options
Forget about installing SP1, updates will do.
Still, user if left with overheating issue making the comp unfit for demanding programs.
Clever who knows what fails in the system, hardware, OS or other software.
