What does this error message mean, "System Call Failed"?
It comes up when I'm trying to select programs or documents.

It could be due to virus/malware which has changed the system settings.
Try the following steps:
Click on the start button and type CMD in the start search.
You will get the CMD in the start menu search results. Right click on it and select Run as administrator.
You will get the Command Prompt window(CMD).
Type SFC /SCANNOW
Press Enter key.
Once it is done(100%), restart the pc to make changes effect and check for the issue.
If it does not work, download the Norton Power Eraser tool and run it:
http://liveupdate.symantec.com/upgrade/NMR/English
Select Run option.
Then you will get Norton Power Eraser window.
Accept the agreement >> select Scan option.
Select "Excluede rootkit" option which is 2nd one to start the online scan.
It will scan your pc and find the virus/malware.
If there is any virus files, you will get Fix button to remove it.
Restart the pc to make changes effect.
if the above steps does not work, try to perform system restore to an earlier date.
