Failed HP Update Running on Vista (64-bit) Solved

My Vista computer has had its HP Update failing from the day I got it.  Finally I determined what was running, set the Privilege Level to run as administrator, and it works fine now.

Here are the steps:

Locate the program (it was "C:\Program Files (x86)\HP\HP Software Update\HPWUCli.exe" for me).

Right-click on it, and select Properties.

Click the Compatibility tab.

Check the box under Privilege Level called "Run this program as an administrator".

It works fine for me after that.

Re: Failed HP Update Running on Vista (64-bit) Solved

Thank you.  That has been aggravating me since i bought this computer.  What was even more aggravating is that I left feedback on HPUpdate every time it failed and received no contact from HP at all.  Why don't they set it up with the proper privileges when they install it?

Re: Failed HP Update Running on Vista (64-bit) Solved

Thank you!

I too am amazed that HP would sell a computer that doesn't allow it's own security program to run.

And worse, that they don't respond to the many feedback messages I left!!

Thanks for this answer!

Re: Failed HP Update Running on Vista (64-bit) Solved

I'm glad I found this, I've just purchased a new laptop with Vista Home Premium and HP Update won't work at all; it keeps freezing my machine and I have to force shutdown to get it back.

One small problem: when I get to that particular program's properties, the option I would need to change is greyed out, even though I'm an administrator.

Any ideas as to why that might be?

Any help is appreciated!

Re: Failed HP Update Running on Vista (64-bit) Solved

It could be several things.  I found the following online that you might try:

Welcome to the Vistax64.com forum.

Step 5 in this tutorial will show you how to check (enable) the "Run as Administrator" option in the Compatibility options.

Compatibility Mode List of Programs (http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/63998-compatibility-mode-list-programs.html)

If you do not want UAC on and not have these problems with it off, then see:

User Account Control (UAC) - Elevate Privilege Level (http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/80938-user-account-control-uac-elevate-privilege-level.html)

and

Administrator Account (http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/67567-administrator-account.html)

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Re: Failed HP Update Running on Vista (64-bit) Solved

Thanks for the help. It was driving me nuts seeing their reminder bubble and not being able to access the program.
