I have an HP m7674n with Sonic Digital Media Deluxe v7. I get the following error when I try to make a Lightscribe disc label from the Sonic tools menu or from the Express Labeler in my start menu (note: Lightscribe Simple Labeler works just fine); error message: “Exception EAcessViolation in module dwwin.dll at 000EAE22. Access violation at address 0061AE22 in module dwwin.dll. Read of address 0000003c.” Does anyone know what this error message means and how I can fix the problem? Thank you.

Hello dt2012,
Seems there could be some conflict between your anti virus application and the Sonic Application.
What anti virus program are you using?

Hi HardBeatZ, thanks for your reply. I'm using McAfee Antivirus plus. Your advice will be appreciated. dt2012.

Hello dt2012,
Have you recently received any messages from McAfee about it wanting to block an application from running? If McAfee blocked the file from running because it believed it was at fault and deleted it then we may have problems because the file may need to be restored.
Express Labeler will not launch
Sometimes having other programs running that are attempting to access the same file then it can cause problems because the new program is not able to access that file. As discussed here.
Using the same above link we can see that at times add on packages that are available for the anti virus programs can sometimes cause issues.
With all that being said. Let's try a few things in order. After each step try to see if you are able to use the program.
1. Lets do a sytem file checker scan
2. Clean boot
Do you have the software that you can reinstall the sonic digital media? Say we do an uninstall / reinstall I want to make sure we can actually do the reinstall part.

HBZ,
I clicked on the links you provided and they are for Vista and Windows 7; I have XP (sorry I didn't mention that before) so I clicked on the XP link those sites provided but there was no System File Checker or Clean Startup information provided for XP.
I checked my START menu and found PC-Help & tools that has a Software Repair Wizard but it only creates System Recovery Discs.
PC-Help & tools also has Application Recovery (which does list Sonic Digital Media Plus). I did not run the recovery app.
I do have the original Application Disc and I assume that Sonic is on there. The reason I say assume is because of the way the instructions are written; it automatically reinstalls all the applications; so I have not put the disc in the drive.
What do you advise? Thank you. dt2012

Hello dt2012,
Let's start by running a system file checker on xp.
To do this follow these instructions
1. Click on start and then run
2. Type CMD and hit ok
3. Type sfc /scannow
After the sfc there is a space
Reboot the computer after it is complete and then see if the error message continues.

Hi HBZ,
Did the sfc/scannow, and rebooted but I still get the error message as previously described. I also click the option to send the error message to Microsoft; but I have never received any follow up from Microsoft. There is probably some helpful information in the error report but it is lengthy and it does not allow a way to copy it; I’d have to write it all down to send it to you. I looked through it and identified dwwin.dll as module 34. Is there specific information that I can get from the report to send to you?
This is what happened when I did the scan; I got the Windows File Protection box with a blue progress bar. Almost as soon as it started I got an error message box with “Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL cache. Insert your Windows XP Professional Service Pack3 CD now.” , and the options to RETRY, MORE INFORMATION, and CANCEL. NOTE: I do not have an XP Professional Service Pack3 CD.
I clicked MORE INFORMATION and got another box with the message “Possible reasons for the problem: - you have inserted the wrong CD (i.e., a different Windows product CD than the version installed.), and - The CD-ROM drive in your system is not functioning.”
I then selected RETRY and got the message, ”You have inserted the wrong CD.”
I hit CANCEL and got “If you cancel, Windows might require you to insert a CD later. Are you sure you want to skip this file? YES, NO.”
I selected YES and the same thing happened another (2) times then the scan progressed to a little more than half way and it happened (1) more time then progressed to about 96% and happened (1) time then at 99+% it happened (9) more times before completing the scan. I closed the windows and rebooted.
Await your advice. Thank you. dt2012.

Hello dt2012,
The fact that it is asking for the Windows CD tells me that there is a problem with the OS, probably on a deeper level than the one dll file missing.
Do you have any of the Windows XP CD's? We may have to look into making a bootable Windows XP with service pack 3 CD if you do.
In the end we may be looking at a complete reinstall at the Operating System level if we can't get the files to be corrected with the scan now.

Hi HBZ,
This is not sounding too good. All the other software that I’ve been using seems to operate just fine. Sonic being the exception in that it gives me the error when I try to do the Express Labeler for Lightscribe. Otherwise Sonic works fine also.
I have other software that can use to do Lightscribe CD/DVD labeling, and I have Lightscribe Simple Labler. Maybe it’s not worth risking other potential problems by pursuing the effort to fix Sonic Express Labeler. Especially since other apps seem to be working. A complete system level reinstall sounds risky to me because I don’t really know what all it entails and how it affects all my other software, files, and settings, etc. I would appreciate your input on the risks and your advice on to pursue or not to pursue a fix. I’m OK with not fixing it; I only wanted to fix it because I don’t like error messages and I wanted the convenience of doing everything I needed to from one app. I don’t know when this problem started since I haven’t used Lightscribe for quite some time. However, I have some projects now that I need to use it again.
The only CD’s I have are the HP System Recovery and Application Recovery CD’s, and Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007 CD.
I read on one of the XP sites that support for XP was ending in 2014 and users should upgrade to Windows 7. Would upgrading resolve this issue? I have not checked into how involved it is to do it or how much it costs but I may consider it. Would appreciate your input and advice.
Thank you. dt2012

Hello dt2012,
Let's take it a step at a time.
1. I would like you to put your system in a clean boot state. After you are in the clean boot state, without doing anything else or opening any other programs I would like you to try to reproduce the issue.
Instructions for putting it in a clean boot state are here How to configure Windows XP to start in a "clean boot" state.
This disables things to startup when your computer starts up, you may want to notate what you have checked here so if this doesn't resolve the issue you can revert back to what you had previously.
2. DLL files are what tells various programs and components of your computer how to interact with noe another. Your computer may be working fine because you have nothing else that needs to access that file. Since you need to access that DLL file now then you see the problem.
3. A system level reinstall is slightly risky, It means we start over back to how you originally received the computer. Any additional programs or system modifications you made would have to be redownload, reinstalled, and reconfigured. (for most this makes the step not worth it). Generally a system reinstall is a last resort only do this if nothing else works step, but sometimes it is the solution with no other steps being available. Right now we are at a point of not knowing what lead to the DLL file being unaccessible so it's leaning more towards the solution, I may know more after the clean boot though.
4. Windows XP support is ending, upgrading to Windows 7 is an option as long as your computer supports the minimum requirements. I dual booted my personal computer with Windows 7 and Windows XP when I chose to upgrade to 7, since the upgrade I have not even accessed XP once. Keep in mind Windows 8 will be releasing relatively soon as well.
5. I'm interested in what Applications the Application Recovery CD will attempt to reinstall. If you insert the CD can you tell me if the Light scribe application is listed as one of the applications to reinstall?
Instructions for using the CD can be found on this troubleshooting link
Recover Applications Using Drivers and Applications Recovery Disc (2001 to 2005)
