HP Pavilion Elite HPE-575a Desktop PC won't configure latest Windows 7 patch from tuesday

Hi

My HP Pavilion Elite HPE-575a Desktop PC running Windows 7, 64 bit won't configure the latest Windows patch from Tuesday 14th August 2012. The computer seems to run all of the updates successfully on shutdown however the next time you start up it only configures around 30% before failing and then shutting down to revert to the previous state.

I have exactly the same problem on a Pavillion p6230f.  I also have a Pavillion p6210f that configured them with no problems.  I tired System Restore because another site suggested that would resolve the issue.  System Restore failed as well.  Otherwise the machine operates normally.

Something must have changed in the microsoft update as this problem resolved itself after several days without me doing anything.
