You can install Windows 7 and install the drivers that are available from Windows Update
windowsupdate.microsoft.com (Check for updates, opt in on all recommended and optional drivers available)
You'll be suprised how many of your devices are already support
The Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor can also tell you if any drivers might be missing after upgrade.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/get/upg
If you still find drivers missing, post to the forum and someone can help you find a driver for your hardware.

Not to mention that I tried installing and upgrade of Windows 7 Ultimate, and was unable to complete the installation due to a conflict with and IDE controller or something similar. I really find it odd that HP isn't offering any updated support for such a costly/capable computer.

I find this happening not only with HP but with my Sony laptop that I bought 2 years ago with crappy ass Vista on it. Neither companys are suppporting Windows 7. I think it is a blatent slap in the face after buying products from these companies and then they don't or won't support newer operating systems, BS in my opinion. There must be some legal stuff behind closed doors with Microsoft that there not letting there customers now about.
All in All from now on I am just going to got back to building my computers like I used to do back in the day. I am sick and tired of companies screwing people over after they spend thousands of dollars for a computer and will not update support for newer operating systems. It's not like they cannot do it they just are not doing it and the big question is why are they not doing it???
I am sorry to say that we are probably stuck with the old bios for this Elite which is BS but that's how they want to play the game they just lost my business.

...was considering upgrading to Windows 7, but these posts indicate Windows 7 will not work with our HP Pavilion Elite M9040N BIOS. Am I reading this right? Anyone successfully upgrade the m9040n from Vista to Windows 7?
Past attempts at OS upgrades (beginning way back when, from DOS to Windows) have always been disasters for me, so I haven't attempted an OS upgrade in many years. Guess things haven't improved in the OS upgrading area.

Have all of you gone through the steps outlined in the hp article below?
I know it is a pain, but I have seen folks not have everything correctly before they are trying to upgrade.
To Arithmeticus, the size may not be the problem. Is the board uses an older SATA 150 controller and you are plugging in a SATA 300 drive? Look to see if the drive has a jumper you can set that makes it SATA 150 compatible since many - but NOT all - drives are backward compatable and maybe yours is not!
Crik - do you have more detailed info?
To all of you - have you checked your BiOS version against what is currently available?

Did you run the Microsoft Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor ?
