HP Pavillion M8100N Other PCI Bridge Device problem and no internet connection

So here's the deal. I recently was handed down a M8100n HP pavillion and I added a video card to it (Nvidia gefroce 7900 gtx)

Everything was working fine and dandy until suddenly the computer just up and froze. I couldn't get back to desktop so I had to manually shut the computer off. Upon turning it back on, during the bios process and windows logo screen, there were strange vertical lines running down screen. Upon getting to desktop, my monitor would say "No connection". So I had to revert to to the computer's onboard display (Nvidia geforce 6150SE nForce 430)

Which worked without any lines or problems.. Until I saw in the device manager, the little yellow question mark next to Other devices. There were SM Bus Control and Other PCI bridge Device. I also noticed I could no longer connect to  the internet to get any update. After searching the internet for hours for possible drivers, the only thing i managed to solve was hte SM Bus Control, however the "Other PCI Bridge Device" is missing.

I don't know if it's related to the video card or something, but I do want to try get a working internet back on or find a driver to solve this. Thank you.

Windows XP Media center.

Aside from the video card change, there were no other changes.

Re: HP Pavillion M8100N Other PCI Bridge Device problem and no internet connection

Hi,

The NVIDIA GTX 7900 as listed on two differnet sites requires a 350 to 400 watt power supply. It's very possible that not only is the card bad but there might be damage to the motherboard which will cause XP pnp not to work.

Try clearing the CMOS and reboot.  Let's see if XP will reinstall the missing drivers.

If not, then try a known good system restore point.

Backup your data to external media and see if the HP recovery disks will correctly re-install the system.

Re: HP Pavillion M8100N Other PCI Bridge Device problem and no internet connection

I guess I forgot to mention that the computer did have a suitable power supply. A 700 watt one that would rightfully supply the video card. I've already taken the card out because it's damaged, now using the onboard graphics card.

I've tried to clear the cmos, but it doesn't seem to do anything. Both that and a system restore have no effect on getting the internet back on. Since several driver updates pop up asking for it (and later state that I should be connected to the internet)

Hi,

Most HP PCs can't handle a 700 watt power supply.

Cut your losses and use the HP recovery disks.

What is the highest watts the HP can handle? I didn't think 700 was too much

I think I'll try to install an exterior ethernet connection in the PCI slot

Hi,

Normally I don't recommemd more than 650 watts as there have been posts where larger PSUs would fail to work.

If you can get online then you can get to NVIDIA for moherboard and driver updates.

Well the good news is because this computer is sort of new (to me) there's nothing valuable on it, and the PCI internet adapter works. Things updated but I still have a few of these "Unknown device updates" which can't be tracke.d

Hi,

Please tell us what you mean by "can't be tracked".  Perhaps can't be found?

Try the NVIDIA web site.  Use option #2 for the motherboard.  I am hoping the it will find the XP driver that also has the Realtek ethernet driver contained within.

We might be down to searching by hardware IDs.
