Re: HP Slimline s5268hk windows reinstall option to 64-bit?

Dave,

Per http://www.microsoft.com/about/legal/en/us/IntellectualProperty/UseTerms/Default.aspx

MICROSOFT SOFTWARE LICENSE TERMS
WINDOWS 7 HOME PREMIUM
These license terms are an agreement between you and
· the computer manufacturer that distributes the software with the computer, or
· the software installer that distributes the software with the computer.

...

2. INSTALLATION AND USE RIGHTS.
a. One Copy per Computer. The software license is permanently assigned to the computer with which the software is distributed. That computer is the “licensed computer.”
b. Licensed Computer. You may use the software on up to two processors on the licensed computer at one time. Unless otherwise provided in these license terms, you may not use the software on any other computer.
c. Number of Users. Unless otherwise provided in these license terms, only one user may use the software at a time on the licensed computer.
d. Alternative Versions. The software may include more than one version, such as 32-bit and 64-bit. You may use only one version at one time.

...

Looks legit to me.

Frank

Frank,

I don't think that  information applies to OEM license keys.

EDIT:  Microsoft informed me on the telephone that after reviewing this link that it is NOT LEGAL.

Re: HP Slimline s5268hk windows reinstall option to 64-bit?

Hi onzki,

There isn't a free upgrade from HP to 64bit Win 7 from your 32bit Win 7 PC. You get the OS that came on the PC when you purchased it. If you want to change operating systems, that is something you would need to do yourself and would have to obtain the OS software through the OS provider (in this case Microsoft). HP doesn't have the authority to change Microsoft licensing agreements.

There are a variety of PCs available that have either 32bit or 64bit operating systems. There are a variety of reasons people would still want 32bit PCs. For example, some people want 32bit because it is compatible with the software they use. Not all software works on 64bit.

Your PC has the full memory capacity of your OS. It physically has 4GB, 2GB memory modules in each memory slot. You aren't losing a full GB of memory in this way, but you are correct that it is less than the full 4GB available from the memory slots. 32bit Windows 7 can use about 3.3GB of the memory. So to get the full limit of memory (which is over 3GB), you need to put in a memory module that goes over that 1 GB, which is why you have 2 sticks of 2GB memory.

Here is a link to your product specs:

One more thing. If you are using integrated video from the motherboard, I'm not positive with your PC, but you may be able to allocate some of that other memory that is not used by the OS to the video memory.
