My problem is HP support assistant never stops downloding
I tried downloading the new file for my desktop sp44409.exe but got a popup during installation:
Your system doesn't meet minimum requirements for this update.
I can't imagine why. I tried right clicking on updated to run as administrator-no help.
Then I tried:
Thanks for your post. Here is a modified form of your suggestion that worked for me:
- Press Start and type in "msconfig" in the Search window. Press Enter
- Click on "Services" tab and find HP Health Check Service. Uncheck this.
- Click Apply. Click OK. Restart computer to finish changes.
With this, I can launch and work with HP Support Assistant. The "Gathering information" message on upper left disappears in a few seconds and all the buttons respond to mouse clicks. Still says "loading" on the bottom for Product Name, Product Number and Serial Number, but this does not prevent the rest of the program from working.
That actually worked sort of. when I ran HP support assistant it got past the download portion finally but failed the download and everything else.

i have the dv7-2270us with win 7 , 64-bit, and i have the exact problem you have described. i have uninstalled, cleared caches, rebooted, reinstalled and still the "gathering information" keeps flashing and hangs. i am really unhappy with the way HP has implemented drivers and help. my system came installed withOUT the webcam software, (which still doesnt allow you to control the cam), and without a working copy of support assistant.
did you ever get your system to work with support assistant?

Funnily enough, my HP Support Assistant has started working. Don't exactly know why.
Here is what happened to my system, and the various steps I went through. One of the other HP programs that automatically checks for updates ran automatically, and asked me to check a box and hit enter such that it would donwload and install something called Windows 7 Hotfix QFE 975741. I did as asked, and then my Windows 7 registry got corrupted. I could not recover to an earlier recovery point and had to completely reinstall Windows 7 and all the other programs I had installed. This time I did not permit Windows 7 Hotfix QFE 975741 to be installed (you can find it at
Windows 7 went through a number of updates, and now my HP Support Assistant is working.
As I said, not exactly sure what happened, and am certainly not recommending anyone else reinstall their whole operating system.

I finally did get HP Support Assistant to work on my Pavillion dv5-1000us computer. I downloaded sp46115 which is the recommended HP Support Assistant install file for my x64 system. I too got the perpetual window that says the system is getting ready to install. I let that run until the Status Bar went through one full cycle. The I right clicked on the HP Assistant icon in the tool bar and closed the window. The install program then continued to install the package. After installing a bunch of files, a series of error messages pop up saying something about a problem with the creation and deletion of windows. Choose to ignore/continue each time it pops up. HP Support Assistant will continue to install and complete. The first time you run it, HP Support Assistant will attempt to download the update packages and keep on trying without success. First time through, I let it run for 10 hours and it never completed.
So, to deal with this problem, go to the drivers and downloads section of the HP site. Find your computer type (ie. Pavillion dv5-10000us) and HP will have a list of updates for your computer. Download ALL of these updates and install them. Some will fail because they are older than current packages or they are incompatible with Windows 7. That is ok. This will bypass the very long update download in HP Support Assistant.
After all of this, the product seems to be working fine for me. HOWEVER, I do wish that this was not necessary.

I have been having the same problem on my HDX18t, Uninstalled and reinstalled HP Support Assistant, HP Active Support, and HP Help and support... Nothing happened, it kept on getting stuck on the screen where it says it is gathering information and cannot do anything.
Anyone found any solutions yet???

Have you tried HP Support Assistant version 4.3.1.2? It's sp46115. It works well on my HP desktop with W7 64 bit. The download can be found in HP's Business Support area. It indicates that it's for laptops and notebooks but it runs well on my e9280t desktop.
You can fit it here:

I had a similar problem. HP Sup Ass tried to update and said I was not connected to the internet. Since all my other software worked thought it was my firewall. Turned off firewall - still said I was not connected to internet. While the notification is up it blocks all other windows making it extremely difficult to work on the issue without shutting down the program - or work on anything else.
- My solution - I uninstalled it. and don't intend to reinstall till HP states they have worked out all the bugs.

Like the poster above, I experienced the same issue and elected to uninstall the HP Spt Asst. This is my first HP tower. Possibly my last. Not impressed with all the bloatware.

Hi I recently purshased a HP Mini 110-1125SA running Windows7 starter with the HP Support Assistant already installed.
It had already been scheduled to do health checks, but like other people have referenced it froze in the download and Windows had to close and look for a solution. Two weeks later no solution has been found. Have looked at some of the recommendations and have it further snags. I got a network Error 1316 whilst it was reading C:\Windows\Install\HP Support
Assistant.msi. Microsoft solution was to download the Windows Install Clean-up and delete the programme.
I did this and it appears to have disappeared from my programmes. However when I attempt to install the new version, it akd me if I want to overwrite the various files. It seems to be doing this and then nothing happens.
What have HP done to ensure that I can neither delete or reinstall this programme.
Finally is it worth keeping and if not which files do I delete because there doesn't appear to clearly indicate.

On 1/20/10 HP tech support removed the HP Support Assistant from my HP Pavilion Elite HPE-180t new computer.
It would not access the internet. The tech said ALL the versions they have are corrupted, at least for my model computer.
Even my model number, AZ222AV, does not yet show up yet for support on the HP support site.
I was told I'd be notified when a new working version of the HP Support Assistant is available.
I'm very disappointed with HP at this point after reading how long this problem has existed.
