Re: HP and Windows 7 from Microsoft

Having just read the thread and noted a few annoyed people and lack of interest from HP, i thought i would add to the fire.

I have a HP Laptop purchased within the "timeframe" but is NOT on the models listed as being Eligible within Australia.

However, to really upset me, i check on the US Side, and MY model IS OK for upgrade.

Thanks HP, glad to see customers around the WORLD are treated FAIRLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How about also having some CONSISTENCY in availability for your CUSTOMERS.  Remember that the customer is the one with MONEY in the POCKET... you want the money, how about CUSTOMER SERVICE FIRST.

Windows 7 and Compaq Media Center PCs --

Any other HP Consumer/Small Business owners hitting this issue --- install of Winows7 64-bit boots on DVD-R wonderfully then *HANGS* complaining that now driver exits for TSSTCorp ( branded as HP Lightscribe ) ???

Anyone been able to install Win7 from a USB drive ? (Disconnect of IDE DVD+RW drive should remove complaint ) during win7 install

Re: HP and Windows 7 from Microsoft

Okay adeski - what you need to do is create your system recovery disks. That option should be built in to your hard drive.

You can read more about your optons here

Re: HP and Windows 7 from Microsoft

Since HP isn't providing the support they should and nothing like my years of experience with Dell, I will attempt to assist here. Though WIndows 7 is not yet a released product it is currently at the Release To Manufacturing (RTM) stage. This means that MS manufacturers are busily reproducing retail and other distributable product to be ready for the October 22 official release.  This also means that their OEM and other partners are in posession of this RTM for the purpose of finalizing their products for compatibility. This could be hardware, software, drivers, peripherals, etc.  Sometime between the RTM release a month ago and October 22, most all of the OEM partners will have supportable products. At some point they have or will soon make decisions as to how far back in their product matrix to support Windows 7. Though HP's official stance is with any system released after June xx, I'm sure that they will support released products / PCs / peripherals / compontents before that date. How far back, is to be determined but there was nothing magical about that June xx date other than a line in the sand.

Most of the components that go into a HP system are manufactured by others. The TV tuner card, the system board, the CPU, the video card, etc., etc. It is up to those hardware manufacturers to support Windows 7. To some degree - and without making excuses for HP - HP is just the messenger. How well they manage their relationships and their channels is another story. If it is the same way they manage their relationships with their consumers via these forums, I have my doubts.

So, about a week before the June xx was announced I received my HP Pavilion. Having read that announcement and having just missed that cutoff date and then reading the nonsense in these forums I quickly became discouraged by my choice to try a HP product rather than building it myself or buying a Dell as I have for several years. I never turned on the PC.  Actually, it was at that point that I decided to rip out my home office and redo it. So the PC sat idle with plastic protective covering and all - until last night - September 8, 2009.

Last night, I finally had my home office back together and proceeded to setup my HP Pavilion along with a pair of Dell 2408WFP monitors. After starting it up and allowing Microsoft updates to bring the installed version of Vista 64 Premium get updated, along with the HP updater, I then took a valid burned copy of Windows 7 64 bit Ultimate (RTM release) (I'm a member of the MSDN community) and decided to do an UPGRADE. I decided to do that as I wasn't quite ready to lose the customized utilities that HP provides. I did this because HP will not provide those utilities as separate downloadable applications. They can only be retrieved from the recovery CD (you create this from an image on the D: drive of a purchased HP system). So, the upgrade would leave everything in place rather than install a fresh copy of Windows 7. A fresh install is my preference in the long run.

This installed with no problem! I was up and running 45 minutes later. I have allowed Windows 7 to complete additional updates. The DVD drive, the GT250 video card, the card readers, my own Logitech G15 keyboard, Logitech MX laser wireless mouse, Mimo USB 7" monitor - all work without any problems. I have also installed additional updated 'beta' drivers as provided by many of these peripheral companies including the Nvidia drivers in support of the GT250 video card provided by HP.

I have not yet connected and tried the TV tuner card. I don't expect that to be an issue as it is made by Hauppauge. I have yet to check their website but would imagine they have beta drivers for Windows 7 also.

So, the message is - don't be concerned that you won't have support for your recently purchased HP machine. One of the best things I have found with Windows 7 aside from it running better then any prior MS OS is that there are drivers for most all 'recen't peripherals.  HP should not be stopping us from putting any OS we want on our PCs. We own the PC - not HP.  If the PC came with customized utilities, they should post those and allow us to install them on top of any OS of our choosing. I hope they will do this soon.

I hope this email gives some of you with pent up anger and concern hope for support of Windows 7.  If anyone is interested, I can continue to post my findings as I engage more of my Pavilion with Windows 7.

David

Re: HP and Windows 7 from Microsoft

[ Edited ]

OK Chucker -- as I understand your reply to adeski my system recovery disks will reinstall Vista should I decide I don't want to use Win 7 after all. Is that correct?

I have an HP/Compaq Presario SR5262NX purchased in November 2007. I have been planning on buying Win 7 while I have my PC at my brother's house for a couple of weeks for updates (I cannot go online at home). But I don't want to lose Vista and the recovery disks are all I have. Apparently when Win 7 installs it reformats the HDD. If that is so, does the Vista system recovery reformat and repartition the HDD for the shadow folder?

My little budget PC runs Vista Home Premium 32-bit SP1 fine. I am beginning to think I should wait till next spring to get Win 7, when more people will have more experience with this kind of upgrade and rwith the new OS. More input would be helpful. And yeah, I'm poking around the MS labyrinth too.

Vista Home Premium, Intel Pentium dual core E2160 1.8GHz, 2GB RAM, 320GB HDD, GeForce 9600 GT, 550 W PSU, HP Pocket Media HDD, Wireless G receiver.

Thanks. Frank
