Hi,
RE: Transfer pre-installed Windows 7 Professional OEM to SSD on brand new PC.
I'm just unpacking my new HP Z400 desktop and have inserted hardware OCZ Vertex 2 SSD
in the case as SATA1, the provided SATA HD with the OEM Windows 7 connected now to the SATA2 port,
and optical drive connected to the SATA3 port. My goal is to use the SSD to install a dual boot operating system
with Windows 7 and either Ubuntu or Mandriva linux on it (for speed). I want to install Win 7 first on the SSD,
then later install the linux.
I'm not familiar with Win 7 OEMs and wonder how best to fresh install Win 7 on the SSD, given that it is now
living on the SATA2 HD. I'd appreciate your advice. Note that the PC has not been turned on yet, so that Windows remains to be installed. The SSD is brand new and empty too.
If I place the SATA2 HD first in the boot order, and proceed to install Win 7, will it provide me with the option
to install the OS on the SSD? I'd want the applications, etc to remain on a SATA2 partition.
I've read around a little about creating a recovery DVD or USB stick, but this would seem to require me installing
the Win 7 first. So is this a necessary step?
Of course I can organise to boot from a linux DVD without any installed OS on the drives.
I'd appreciate your thoughts and expereience.
TIA
hmhxxx

Thank you so much for your help! I had to "repair" my MS Works 7 Money2004. But I had the disc which came with my PC when I purchased it. This "repaired" my problem.
I've been looking for a job for a long time, my resume was there and all my notes, all my contacts for jobs...Thank you again for your help!

Actually Im using Win 7 right now and it is great. It has new features and faster than any windows.Somebody tell me that it is not compatible with online games but it is not true.Win 7 is best for all online games it can directly adjust the settings of their resolution. All I can say Win 7 is best OS in microsoft today.

Actually you don't need vista to install windows 7.You can try to use Win XP service pack 3 to install windows 7 but in custom installation. All your files will be deleted. You can't upgrade window xp sp3 to windows 7.Just try and P.M me.Thanks.

I have come to realize that most of every thing Microsoft makes is crap.
I don't use Explorer any more because it is slow and crashes mere than it runs.
I go out to buy a music player to listen to tunes on my motorcycle since I am stuck with the windows 7 junk now got Microsoft Zune player, Guess what even that is not compatible with windows 7 . no drivers .
My next system will be a Mac , I am done with Microsoft.
