HP's Official Windows 7 Information Page     |     Microsoft's Official Windows 7 Site

If you already own a computer with Windows Vista you most likely aren't entitled to receive a free/discounted Windows 7 license.

If you buy a computer after June 26th, you may be eligible for the free/discounted Windows 7 upgrade.  [See here for more information]

Re: HP and Windows 7 from Microsoft

So if I purchased a laptop from HP less than a month ago, I should return it and buy another one tomorrow?

Re: HP and Windows 7 from Microsoft

That is a great question and something I'm looking for an answer to. I just purchased and received my m9600t Pavilion desktop. As a matter of fact, I haven't turned it on just yet.  I know I have 21 days to return it for a refund. However, I don't think HP wants to start receiving returned equipment for customers that just fall short of the June 26 date, though I could be wrong.  So, my questions;

- is my (product # - KX745AV#ABA) upgradable at any cost to Windows 7? Are all of the components in my custom build system in the upgrade path for Windows 7 supported drivers, etc.?

- am I eligible for a Windows 7 upgrade through HP at any cost?

- am I eligible for a Windows 7 upgrade from HP through the 'free' upgrade program, having received it on June 24th?

- does being an EPP customer change any of the answers to the above?

Thank you

David

Re: HP and Windows 7 from Microsoft

There seem to be thousands of folks who bought HP computers on June 24 or 25....and all are asking the same question, will HP step up and treat these new customers right and give them the Windows 7 upgrade for free?   Or will the customers all be forced to return the computers and go elsewhere for a computer and free Windows 7 upgrade.

I see a lot of posts but no decent response from HP at this time.   I purchased on the evening of June 25th -- murphy's law kicked in full force.   I hope HP provides better support for new customers.   Otherwise, they are no better than the cheap no name brands from overseas.   I will return the product if forced to do so by HP.

Re: HP and Windows 7 from Microsoft

I contacted HP regarding my issue (bought system evening of June 25th) and then Windows 7 upgrade offered free the next morning.    I asked them if they would work with me and give me the upgrade or if they wanted me to return the system to the store for a refund and buy something else.

A day later customer service rep (Answari) called and left a message, saying he had good news and to call him back.   So I rejoiced in thinking HP was going to take care of me....good business decision to not have a system returned which would be sold as refurb and upset a new customer....but when I called back another HP customer service rep (Alex) laughed at me while quoting the regulations and told me to return the system to the store.

So the answer seems to be that HP prefers any purchases prior to June 26th within the return window to be returned to the stores.   Don't wait...return your systems and buy something else to get the Windows 7 free upgrade.

Very Upset Customer!

Re: HP and Windows 7 from Microsoft

Uh oh. Bought a Compaq SR5780AP in Singapore.

In Feb 2009. Vista HB.

Whats more Singapore does not have an offer on upgrades, like $50 for W7HP in the USA.

Bytheway, does HP offer free license OR discounted license, 'cos I do not prefer buying retail.

Summary: I just want to buy something from the manufacturer my computer was built.

Although I do trust retail, I just need extra drivers for my computer, Thanks.
