After installing Adobe Acrobat 7.1 on my new desktop computer, I get an error message "Warning 20225 unable to create new item: PDF port & printer. The PDF printer may not be available". I don't see the PDF printer listed with the printers, and can't print documents in PDF. Is this a Windows 7 issue, or possibly a setting on my computer that I can fix? This software worked perfectly on my previous desktop running Windows XP.

Hi gpille,
I think this is an Adobe issue. Here is a support document I found on their site related to it:
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/321/321546.html
I hope this helps.

Yes, I had found that site and tried some of the suggested solutions that were easy. Several are "over my abilities" and I didn't understand how to perform them. I was hoping there was an easier fix to this, and it's almost impossible to contact an Adobe tech for help. Apparently there's a file in Win7 that causes the PDF printer to not work when installing Adobe 7.1

Hmmm...have you tried installing a fake PDF printer? (not actually getting a real printer, just running the setup from Windows Printers and Faxes)

Another program that I installed (Quicken) has a PDF printer that works fine for docs in this application. I'm not sure what you mean by installing a "fake PDF printer"? When I look at the options in Windows printers & faxes set-up, there doesn't appear to be a selection for a PDF printer. I'm not even sure what printer port to select, and you have to select a printer manufacturer / model. Is this what you're referring to? I sat on the phone today for 30 minutes waiting for an Adobe technical rep to help me & finally gave up.

Yeah, you were going down the path I was talking about. Can you tell the application to use the PDF printer that installed with Quicken? For example, if you select that printer as your default printer do you still get the Adobe error?
I'm doing some "googling" on this and it looks to be a common issue on the Adobe forums. Here is an Adobe doc I found on the error:
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/321/321546.html
I hope this helps.

Thanks for trying to help, but I've come to the conclusion that Adobe Acrobat 7.1 isn't compatible with Win7 (it's their convenient way of forcing us to buy new software every 4 years). I'm going to uninstall it and buy one of their competitors PDF software.

Ok. Sorry you weren't able to get it to work.
