You may have a partition that has not been removed.  Did you install a linux partition on it? Download the manufacturer's drive certification iso image from their web site and make a bootable CD.  Use the CD to test the drive and then erase the drive. Then try the recovery.

Are you using Recovery Disks? If so,try booting with a utilty cd to delete all partitions, create 1 partition & format hdd. I have had good results with the free Partition Wizard .Download the Bootable CD iso here .Get ImgBurn here to burn the image to cd.

 

After all operations with PW are complete try booting with your Recovery disks again.Be sure to unplug any external devices such as printer,etc. Only have kbd,mouse & monitor attached.
