I need help figuring out how to install Windows Vista disk  to a HP Pavilion 6475z.   I had to replace the hard drive so it has nothing on it and I have added more ram, but I had replace the cd player  so it isn’t installed on the HP yet.   So I was wondering if I could put the installation disk into my laptop cd/dvd and connect the computers by the usb ports and install it that way, and if not how can I?

Hi,

You will need to get a working CD/DVD Drive installed in the HP Pavilion 6475z and run your Recovery Discs from this.

How do I get a working drive in there, when I can't install or download anything on it?

No the cd/dvd player on the HP went last yr.  I have two computers that are in this shape the other is a Gateway tower,but I need to replace the harddrive in it also.

You're welcome

If the CD/DVD drive in the Gateway PC works, you could ( at least temporarily ) remove it and install it in the HP so you can run your Recovery Discs and reinstall Vista.  Once everything is up and running on the HP, you can always remove the CD/DVD drive and reinstall it in the Gateway PC if you wish.

ok, sometimes I am really a nut...   I have 3 cd/dvd drives, but  for some reason I thought they had tobe installed already before I could put the disk in to install vista...   why did I think that??  Also, you sound pretty smart is there a difference between sdram and ram?  The HP has 174 mb of sdram in it and I forgot what the size of the hard drive is that I put in there, but it had Windows 98 and I gave the desktop to my neighbor who has Cerebral Palsy and is in her chair almost 24/7.  Windows 98  wouldn't let me download any new games on the computer for her, she doesn't want the internet, just the games....

Hi,

There will be a difference between sdram and other types of ram ( for example DDR, DDR2 and DDR3 ) as apart from anything else, the memory slots on the Motherboard will be different.
