Just trying to learn how a person gets in to my computer, an I did not let them in, an how do I tell

I'm Grady. I have a HP 2210m, a few days ago found out there was other persons useing my computer on line or some how. I got iYogi to put in a better protection system. But I don't understand is how presons got passed McAee anAdobe Reader X an what ever protection I had. So could please be very slow in teaching me please. See I'm not the smatest guy when comes to the computer! Thank you Grady.
