My desktop and menu bar disappear. HP Pavillion s5704Y

When I use a DVI to HDMI cable from my computer to the tv to watch the internet on my TV, when I unplug the cable I lose my desktop and menu bar and have do a recovery to get it back, do I need to unplug something differently?
