PC restarting when loading the Windows O/S but running Linux Live CD fine.

Hello Experts,

I have HP Media Center PC. Its a dual boot system of both the Windows 7 and Windows XP. When I booted in Windows 7 everything was fine but suddenly when I pressed the keyboard button on desktop, blue screen appeared with some message something like ,"Windows restarting to prevent from error", (Dont remember the message exactly).

After that DOS type black screen came up and showed BIOS error, Keyboard not found, trying to boot from CD -- Not found, Floppy not found and after that system restarted but this time I hear a BEEP sound and no screen.

I tried resetting the RAM and now restarted PC fine. But when I boot into any Operating system it shows initial welcome screen for 3-4 seconds and then restarts.

DOS test done (PC doctor 5) found 1 error : Register CP-514-1 (This is error code).

I also tried running the original windows 7 cd then it showed some boot error problem.

I also tried running Linux Live Cd and it ran successfully and I could easily see my HDD partitions with data and surf internet too.

I hope its not MoBo, HDD or Processor problem. Please help me solve it.

Thanks in advance.

Pavillion_fan, you say that there is a beep.  You can check the HP BIOS beep codes to see what it means.

Also, you may be experiencing a boot sector problem.  This can happen with dual boot systems when the bootloader is corrupted.  Try using the Linux Live CD to fix the boot sector.  You can do this by starting the install process fron the CD.  If you can get an Ubunu Live CD it may work easier.  You can go to www.ubuntuforums.org for help.  This is the reason that I use separate hard drives for each OS.  I always have a backup system.

When requesting help, you should always include the make/model of the computer and/or monitor. This information is necessary for us to review the specifications of them.

Re: PC restarting when loading the Windows O/S but running Linux Live CD fine.

I am sorry for not mentioning the model number. Here it is :

m7581in

Well I have reformatted the system using recovery disc and now it says ,"These recovery discs are not for this model".

When I looked into the BIOS, I was surprised to see that my model number changed from m7581in to m7660in.

Then I remembered that in march 2012, HP service changed my Motherboard as it was crashed but I think they installed the wrong motherboard.

Now I am worried that I do not have an O/S (recovery disc not working) and my service period is over. However as a matter of fact HP should replace to my original Motherboard because it was not my fault of installing wrong motherboard.

Re: PC restarting when loading the Windows O/S but running Linux Live CD fine.

Both the HP Media Center m7581in Desktop Computer and the HP Pavilion Media Center TV m7660in Desktop Computer use the same P5BW-LA (Basswood) motherboard. HP installed the correct motherboard but forgot to "tattoo" the correct model number and serial number in motherboard BIOS. Contact your local HP service center or HP customer support in your region to try to resolve this issue.

Re: PC restarting when loading the Windows O/S but running Linux Live CD fine.

BAD BAD hp service. They said they will not do it as my system is now out of warranty. I will have to take my system to the service center and I also need to pay for it.

I explained them my point of view that when HP changed the MoBo at that time my system was in warranty.

They replied why I am telling this now I should have told this thing (the wrong motherboard installation thing) at that time. I said," I am an end user and not an investogator what you do with the hardware, I just came to know about this problem when I could not use recovery discs."

IS THERE ANY HIGHER AUTHORITY PRESENT IN THESE FORUMS WHO CAN HELP ME WITH SUCH RUDE HP BEHAVIOUR ?

However I downloaded a new WINDOWS XP MCE cd and tried to install it but I get blue screen with some  ERROR STOP 0x0000007B. What is the reason behind this? (It never happened before) I do not want to go to HP and I want to install this CD available with me. How do I solve this error?

Re: PC restarting when loading the Windows O/S but running Linux Live CD fine.

You are getting the Stop error with XP MCE due to SATA hdd on an Intel board.XP does not have the SATA driver buitin.. Look in BIOS setup to see if you have the option to change SATA controller from AHCI/RAID to IDE mode.
