Problem with Easy Tranfer. Many photos did not transfer.

[ Edited ]

I ran the easy transfer from old (windows XP) to new P7 1131 that is 1 week old. Many of my files, almost all photos did not transfer. These photos are my oldest, therefore my most treasured pics. I noticed the file names on the ones that did not transfer are strange, different from the newer ics from my new Nikon. They are JPEG photos. I am now trying to one by one transfer the files w/flash drive, but there are hundreds of photos that I did not get. Also, I have no list of what did not transer. My library is about 10k photos, so you can see how difficult it is to find what did not make it over. Please help!!! If you need more info please let me know. I will be at computer. Thank You.

Re: Problem with Easy Tranfer. Many photos did not transfer.

Can you give a few examples of the "strange" file names?

Thanks,

Re: Problem with Easy Tranfer. Many photos did not transfer.

Some of the photos are lables with things like X,YYY,BOOGS,JORDY,CAT, etc. This was years ago, most of these files were created with the early digitsl cameras like the Mavica, where you actually put a floppy in the back. I believe I had a problem a ling time ago, that i can not remember the specifics ( 9 years ago), but I had to change the file names for some reason, and just randomly asigned namees to the files, with no logic to the names. Idi not know what i was doing more then than now. So i just made up anything. Now all these years later, the photos are laying in a large pool of 16,000 files. It is probably around 1000 that did not transfer, but these 1000 I need badly. I am in a crunch for time, I have to get these photos off the old computer, because it is sold, and over due to be shipped out to person i sold it to. I have to reformat the computer to new, and erase all contents ASAP. If you can help that would be great Thanks.

Update: What I have been doing is one by one, or sometimes a group of 12 or so, I tranfer them to a flash drive, move them to new computer, rename them in numerical order, with a .jpg name, and put them in a folder, but it is taking FOREVER!!

Re: Problem with Easy Tranfer. Many photos did not transfer.

Hi,
Typically, the Easy Transfer program will search for "standard" file names like JPG. If they did not have a label like "cat.jpg" then it is likely they were not recognized as photos for transfer. Unfortunately, there isn't an easy solution here.

My suggestion, if you're on a time crunch, is to purchase a larger USB drive (basic electronic stores should have them for around $20). I would look for at least 4GB. That should speed up the transfer.

Can you hook up both machines to a network? Copying over the network would be a lot faster.

Re: Problem with Easy Tranfer. Many photos did not transfer.

Thanks for responding. Im not sure what you mean by hooking up to network. My new computer is wireless, and old is hooked to internet w/ ethernet. The removable thumb drive I have is 8GB. Based on what I wrote above, I guess both are on the same network, I think. If the files that are not marked w/ .jpg would not transfer to new computer, are you saying there is a way to tranfer tham all in one shot to a drive anywy, and work on this slowly as time permits, rather than working like this? If so that would be great. Please advise. Thanks again.

And here is how to set up a wireless network: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01894383&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&product=5156994&tmp...

Just make sure you share the folder on your OLD computer that has the pictures in it.  On your NEW computer, you should be able to see the folder and simply drag-and-drop.
