My hard drive died on this unit & I'm now running XP Professional Service Pack 2. Most things are running well (but not one key one - an internect connection), but I'm apparently lacking a lot of drivers & well, I don't have the original CD available to simply get 'em going, or not sure if XP makes for different needs than Vista.
Here is what Device Manager says I need a driver for & I'm going nuts trying to find on HP's site along with another like Intel's b/c I don't know which precise driver is needed from the filter options for XP. Here's what I need, & I appreciate any precise directions for a novice like myself...
* Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus
* Ethernet Controller
* Multimedia Video Controller
* PCI Simple Communications Controller
* SM Bus Controller
Thanks - ST

Hi:
I'll say you are. ![]()
Your PC is not supported for XP by HP, so we'll have to visit the individual hardware component manufacturer's sites to get what you need...
First:
Install the chipset driver and reboot. First download is the one you want.
Then install the video driver and reboot.
Audio: Accept the agreement. Download and install the first driver listed in green around 7th on the list.
Network: Download and install the 6th one on the list.
PCI simple comms controller: I think you have a Conexant PCI modem in there.

Paul,
Many many thanks - the story on going to XP is insane, & you have restored my sanity - again my appreciation.
1 remaining issue however. The Video driver... I can download & start the install, but I get a "your computer does not meet the minimum requirements to install..." which seems unusual...
Else - everything is perfect.

You're very welcome.
That is an important driver needless to say, so we will have to try some other tricks.
Give this driver from Dell a try which covers a variety of Intel onboard graphics adapters including one for your G33 chipset.
Click on the green rectangular download box on the upper left side of the page.

Your machine has Nvidia 8400GS:

Hi:
Cheryl is 100% correct.
I neglected to look at the product specs where it clearly states your PC comes with a nvidia graphics card (8400 GS).
I was only looking at the motherboard specs where you normally get the hardware info for the drivers you need.
Since it stated it had the Intel G33 chipset and onboard graphics, I wrongly assumed it had the Intel integrated video for that chipset.
So, the video driver Cheryl posted will work, and you will be all set to go.
In the future, you can bet that I will take a look at both the product specs and the motherboard specs when looking for drivers unsupported by HP.

Easy to overlook Paul.I was just about to post directions for a force install from Device Manager when I thought...'first take a quick look at main specs page'.![]()

Hi folks,
Thought I was so clear, but while I have reasonble screen... and everything is functioning (minus sound, but I'll figure that out, at least everything is plugged in & all drivers are working properly)... Device Manager still says the following are failing.
*multimedia video controller
*pci simple communications controller
I've reread both of your instructions, and done what was suggested, but still get this exclamation point warnings. Thanks again for your insights & willingness to assist!

Hi:
I guess it is time to look at the hardware ID's for more info.
Please click on each of those devices needing drivers in the device manager.
Then click on the details tab.
Post the top string of characters you see for each device.
Those will identify the type and model of each device and I will see what we can do.
Paul
