USB Cannon camera won't download pictures

I have a Cannon Power Shot A40 camera, win 7 pro 64 bit, USB cable, Devices and Printers gives yellow (!) but "apply fix" leads me to Cannon site but no device drivers needed (?), autoplay won't start when camera turned on and plugged in .. I think it is set up right .. enabled and pictures says  "import pictures...".  It looks like Win 7 just won't recognize it as a camera?  Works fine with old XP system which starts some kind of a download wizard when USB is plugged in.  System is HP Pavilion Elite HPE-570t with i7-2600, this is the first time I have tried to use any camera with this system.

Please help, thanks.

Re: USB Cannon camera won't download pictures

Open up Control Panel,Switch from 'Category' view to 'Small icons' so you can easily see all options.Look for Autoplay, open it and see how it is set for Pictures.

Re: USB Cannon camera won't download pictures

I may have been too cryptic above.  For Autoplay, the "Use AutoPlay for all media and devices" box is checked and for Pictures the "Import pictures and videos using Windows" option is selected.

I am concerned that in Control Panel "Devices and Printers"  I get a yellow exclamation mark next to the "Power Shot A40" icon (icon looks like a generic box not a camera)  that appears when I plug in the camera USB cable.  Does this imply that Win 7 does not know the device is a camera?  When I right click and dig down to properties then properties again under hardware I find a "The drivers for this device are not installed (code 28)" message.  I then click "troubleshoot" - "Apply this fix" - "view solution..."  - "Click to download and install the driver from the Cannon website".  and don't find a driver for the camera for any OS but find a "zoom browser" application which doesn't help when installed.

Is there anyway to tell Win 7 this is a camera and to use some generic driver?  I believe in the past (using Win XP)  I have not installed a driver  but  the systems were able to download the photos anyway.

Thanks.

Re: USB Cannon camera won't download pictures

Problem solved, the required driver for Win 7 does not exist, the camera is too old.

Oh well I guess that is progress???

If your camera uses a memory card (as most do) you could take it out and use it in the Media Card Reader on your PC to get photos.
