I have a HP Pavilion Media Center TV m7580n Desktop PC that recently had to be resurrected from a virus and code purple crash. I am wondering if anyone has experience in upgrading the operating system on this machine to Vista or Windows 7? If so, did you add ram, upgrade the video card and/or processor? Thanks for your insights.

Don't waste your time thinking about going from XP to VISTA. Go right to Windows 7 but run the Windows Upgrade Advisor before you do anything. If you need XP compatibility should you go to W7 then buy the professional or ultimate version. You will have to do a clean install going from XP to W7.
You can't install more than 4 gb of memory and a 32 bit OS will not give you more than 3.5 useable. Your video card is a bit weak so finding one that will fit without having to then upgrade your power supply might be a good upgrade option. Look at this list of NVIDIA video cards.
