Re: aero peek stops

The link from Big_Dave regarding "Aero Mode Issues" was excellent. Solved my problem as the Desktop Manager was found to be disabled.

I'm pretty tired of this problem.  No one seems to know or care.  Also, when I play video in windows media player after the computer has woken up it is slow and jumpy....can't just be a few of us.  I have an HP laptop with win7 and it works fine.

I agree with you on this and I'm sure there are many thousand others as well.   I've just upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate on my a6750f and have this problem as well.   A Google search on "Windows 7 Aero Peek disabled after sleep" returns over 2 million hits.

This problem has been a day one issue with the Beta releases and there is still no definitive fix at least for HP PC's.   I did come across an entry on some other forum that indicated this problem was fixed with a new firmware/bios release from his vendor that was specifically for this issue.    It was not an HP PC but did have AMD chipset and video.

The latest firmware/bios release for the a6750f is date 5/7/2009 which could be before this issue was even detected.  I have installed it though and it didn't fix it.

By the way the Sleep issue is NOT ONLY with Aero Peek.   When my PC returns from sleep Windows Media Player will not run either.    It could either simply error out, hang the player window, or hang the entire PC with the only out being a forced powerfail.    Also the Windows Experience Index can not be re-assessed either, it hangs on one of the tests and eventually times out.

I'm a retired HP Enterprise Software employee and in our division this sort of issue wouldn't be allowed to carry on this long unresolved.   Even if the problem wasn't an HP problem.   I'm challenging any current Desktop division HP employee reading this note to do what's right and pass this issue up the chain until it is resolved.

Re: aero peek stops

> By the way the Sleep issue is NOT ONLY with Aero Peek.

In my case (W7 X64 on Tx2)  waking from Sleep often temporarily (over 5 minutes) froze all the HID (mouse, keyboard, touch, buttons, etc.).   I could still see modem lights, drive lights, etc. flashing which made it clear that the machine wasn't completely hung.   Initially what I was doing when I recognized that I was in that state was press Ctrl-Alt-Delete and wait for its screen.  However, I later realized that I could do better by anticipating the symptom happening and altering my "wake from sleep procedure" accordingly.  So, now what I do is carefully press right-click on the mouse, e.g. instead of moving the mouse and generating all its interrupts, and then press Esc to close the right-click menu.  Doing this seems to avoid the symptom.  Another change I have made recently is installing W7sp1, so I might not need to rely on my procedure any more but it is now ingrained so it will take a conscious effort not to do it.   ; )

Re: aero peek stops

This won't work for me.   I have the mouse disabled from waking from sleep.

On my PC I set it up after a fresh restart with only 1 window open.  I leave the mouse hovering over a Taskbar Icon and the preview pane is visible.    I hit the Sleep button on keyboard and wait for yellow light on power button.   I hit the spacebar once and stand back and watch touching absolutely nothing else.    It awakes and displays OK the preview pane is still showing.   Wait 2-5 seconds and the window flashes a couple of times and all I have on my Icon preview is a one line text display.       By the way I have "Require a password on wakeup" set to NO.

>  I have the mouse disabled from waking from sleep.

Thanks for the idea.   I'll try that too.

> I hit the Sleep button on keyboard

On my wireless keyboard I don't have one of those and the wireless keyboard uses the same USB receiver that the mouse uses, so maybe I'll disable that one too.   In fact, I have wondered if my symptom had more to do with my wireless receiver than the "wake from Sleep" function.   A problem then is trying to find something else to do which would substitute, since I leave my tablet in slate mode with the screen off.

>  I hit the spacebar once

Oh.  The Sleep button is for putting it to sleep only?  Would it wake if you used that again instead?   I'd wonder about what the keyboard focus of your Spacebar press would be.  For example, I have also tried to use one of the Quick Launch buttons (Mobility Center, or TouchSmart software--not Rotate) but using those does more than just wake from Sleep, which is not what I want.  It seems wrong that functions work when you can't see what they might be doing, which is why I chose to use a right-click function as being relatively innocuous.  As an extreme example, think what would happen if keyboard focus happened to be on a link in your browser:  if the Spacebar key was actually passed through to the browser as well as waking the machine from sleep you might end up waking up with your browser showing you a page you had never even seen before!   ; )

> all I have on my Icon preview is a one line text display

I have tried to visualize what this looks like.   I'm imagining that it looks the same as the Aero preview frame but empty of its thumbnail?   Or something more corrupt?   But then in view of your use of  Spacebar  what would you expect to see instead?   For example, try using the Menu key (e.g. right-click equivalent) instead?...  Oh.  Clearly your keyboard focus would be a factor which you don't seem to be considering in your scenario.   So, try this refinement to your procedure:   press Ctrl-Esc, Esc  first;  then pressing Spacebar, regardless of the position of the mouse pointer apparently could result in your Start menu showing...  ; }

Good luck

Re: aero peek stops

No thanks to either HP or Microsoft but I have finally found a fix to this issue. It's a software fix (workaround) but it seems to me to still be a problem with the BIOS.

Some system boards may be able to fix this with BIOS, if you are unable to fix in BIOS, then you can try the following Windows 7 workaround.

‪1.‬ Start, type cmd, right click, Run as Administrator.
‪2.‬ Type bcdedit /set useplatformclock true and press enter.
‪3.‬ Type bcdedit /enum and press enter.
‪4.‬ Verify that useplatformclock is on/true.
‪5.‬ Restart the computer then test aero issue.

The above worked liked a charm for me on the following platform:

System Manufacturer HP-Pavilion
System Model FQ563AA-A2L a6750f

Processor AMD Phenom(tm) 9650 Quad-Core Processor, 2300 Mhz
BIOS Version/Date Phoenix Technologies, LTD 5.13, 07/05/2009

Re: aero peek stops

FWIW I think that my symptom was fixed by  W7sp1.
