If you have important files, photos, etc that you don't want to risk losing I would not do the update without backing them up.An external USB HDD could be used for backup.

can I do a backup on a jump drive? PC is 1.5 yrs old, how can the CD/DVD be broken already? I used it once. HP said to replace it with any DVD drive but it's a Blu Ray does that mean I need to use a Blu Ray DVD drive?

Yes a flash drive will work if it is large enough.
Not sure why the CD/DVD drive is broken with so little use, maybe due to some registry or other issue. If you decide to replace the drive there is no requirement to use a Blu Ray drive, any CD/DVD burner will work.
Try MS's automated FixIT:

That is an external CD/DVD drive. If you want an internal to replace the original drive you need something like this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8
Btw,what is the model number of your machine? That way I can look up specs to see exactly what you have now.

The drive I posted above will work fine for you.It ,along with these, are top rated by buyers at Newegg.

If you want one close to what you have now that also plays Blu Ray:

Thanks, I will look into this, I bought this PC from a neighbor who had the HD wiped, I suspect the drive that's in there is not HP and not the original HP BluRay, I am hoping I can find out what's in there
