I have a HP Pavilion m9452nl desktop, 64bit Vista operation system. All works fine, but since a month windows will not perform any updates. All microsoft suggestions do not help or solve the problem. Their final advice is to repair windows using the windows vista dvd. I have restore disks, but these only allow for full restore to factory settings. HP did not provide for windows vista dvd. What do I do?

What are you using for your anti-virus? Try to go into your internet options and on the advanced tab look for the reset area. Click on that and check the box for user options as well. Download Malwarebytes free version:
http://download.cnet.com/windows/malwarebytes/3260
You can also try an online scan from housecall.trendmicro.com .
Try the system file checker:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833
Try this fix from Microsoft:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/T

KeesZeef,
You did not state what efforts or suggestions you applied, so I offer mine.
This is so common that MS released a tool that fixes it. Called the Vista Readiness Tool
If you have Vista with SP2, use this version of the Vista Readiness Tool.
CAUTION: this may take 15-20 minutes.
To fix errors that occur when you use Windows Update, install and run the System Update Readiness Tool. The tool scans for inconsistencies on your computer and fixes them as it's being installed.
To say THANK YOU, press the white star on the left, to render a KUDO.
Please click Accept as Solution, just to the right of my reply if your problem is solved.
PS--You can render both Solution and KUDO

Thanks for your kind attention.
I am using F-Secure anti-virus software. All is up to date and all light are green!
I tried the system file checker. Repairs were made, but the sfcdetails.txt reads:

I was not able to follow the procedure suggested - I just was not able to translate the commands to my system.
Problem not solved

As indicated none of the suggestions so far have solved the problem. I continue to get the error 80070490 whilst trying to update windows.
Please do continue your suggestions! Highly appreciated.

Can you run a check disk on your hard drive? I don't like the fact SFC can't fix some items. Maybe download the manufacturer's hard drive test and run it against your hard drive.
