Greetings,
I am in the process of changing operating systems on a newly purchased HP desktop - a6700y. Done with vista, especially this x64 version - too resource intensive. Anyhow, if anyone knows what the the correct drivers are for the conversion, I'd appreciate it. Are the drivers the only things I need to perform this task? Thanks in advance for any assistance.
The major hardware includes:
Processor: Phenom-9150e (A) 1.8 GHz (65W)
Chipset: Nvidia GE force 6150SE - nforce 430
Graphics: Integrated Nvidia
Hard Drive - 500 GB SATA 3G
Sound: ALC 888S chipset
Keyboard: HP multimedia PS2
Mouse: PS2 optical
Regards.

Install the Chipset driver and reboot. Then install all other drivers.
Chipset:NVIDIA nForce 430

graphics driver:NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE/LE

Audio:ALC888S

If needed:
LAN Realtek RTL8201N

.net 1.1(for keyboard)

Original HP Multimedia Keyboard/Mouse Drivers

Wireless LAN Drivers:
Lite-on Wireless Lan

The Lite-On should work but here is the Ralink Driver.

I read that there is sometimes an issue with the sata hard drive and xp not being able to detect it upon installation. Have you heard anything like this?

I would suggest that before you make the conversion - be sure to make a set of recovery DVDs - just in case you want to go back to Vista 64 - you can.
XP doesn't have Media Center. It also doesn't have support for all 4GB of RAM in your system, although you should see about 3GB plus some.
You might try a few things first, to see if it makes a difference.
Turn off User Account Control in the control panel. Turn off the Windows Sidebar on the desktop, and disable "Aero" mode in the graphics setup. Also, go into the control panel, and turn off most of the Windows Indexing stuff - or just go into the services and turn off indexing service all together. I think with all those changes - you might find it to be a bit snappier.
I think Vista has gotten a bad rap - I kind of like it - if you've got a system with enough horsepower and memory to make it thrive - a quad core with 4gb should do fine.
My opinions - but I strongly recommend making a set of recovery discs just in case you change your mind. If you don't - and want to go back later, you'll likely have to purchase a set.

Thanks again.
I just want to make sure I understand the order of operations here...
It looks like:
1) run the xp install CD and, at the same time, wiping out vista
2) install the chipset
3) reboot?
4) install the new xp drivers
or is this the wrong order?
Regards,
Jeff
