I did a system recovery because my hp pavilion kept freezing up. I deleted some files and thought that would help but made it worse. So I did a full system recovery. After, I noticed I no longer have any of the files I had. I knew I would have to reinstall programs but I thought files would remain. Is there a way to retrieve files? I hate the idea of starting all over more than 3 years of work on my computer.

A System Recovery formats the hdd, clearing all files, before reinstalling Windows. There are commercial file recovery services that may be able to retrieve your files, but they are not cheap.
