I own an HP Pavilion dv2214us laptop with Vista Home Premium that I purchased from Circuit City in February of 2007. It began to show startup failures in July of 2009 and at first I thought it was akin to the rash of black screen startup problems documented in various web fora that cover such problems, but as I tried repeated boot attempts I finally found that all I have to do is press the start button, let it sit with black screen for a few seconds (no messages appear at all, and shining a light on the screen reveals nothing), hold the button long enough to switch it off, then press the start button again and it boots normally as if nothing is wrong. I don't know of any hardware or software installation that could be related, but there was some overheating that I successfully treated with a bios flash and compressed air. I run System Mechanic 9 as a tuneup package and performance is satisfactory.
To summarize, I have to turn it on, turn it off, then turn it on again before it will boot. Whatever this condition is, it will not restart, nor will it awake from sleep. It must be cold booted twice in order for the bios and Windows Vista to load.
Help. I need to have it restart and awake from sleep.

Try the steps in this HP Support document on troubleshooting black screen at startup.
Let us know how it goes.

I performed the steps related to my situation up to the point of reinstalling Vista. Since my computer is performing satisfactorily other than the inconveniences associated with not being able to use the sleep function or restart without cold booting, I hesitate to restore it to factory fresh condition.
If there any other non-destructive procedure you can recommend, please do. I have a feeling it's a problem either with the logic of the sleep recovery hardware in the lid switch (pardon my lack of proper technical language), or in the hard drive's ability to wake from sleep.
Can the switch mechanism be replaced? I'm thinking of replacing the hard drive too.
Any more ideas?
