 is it important and if so how do  I get it to run.

 Yes , i have  the external drive and never thought of it.

When I boot this computer it says WDDM is  not running. Task Manager says that WD SmartWare is running. When I click on WD SmartWare on the task bar, System (my computer) information shows, but nothing else. When I try to click on Update Software, Contact us, or anything else, MS Word opens with some html code. I can't do anything else.

Thanks it probablly wants to update and I do not have the Western Digital software or external device on or hooked up.

My harddrive is a WD and i havewindows 7 but Ithink it began as vista. I took it in for repair and windows 7 was on it when I got it back. Can you help me - there is a lot on this drive and I know i have space left. It is a 500drive.
