Model: HP m9200z
OS: Vista 64
Audio Hardware: Creative SB X-Fi
5.1 speaker system: Creative Inspire T6200
Issue: The speaker system plays all sound to all five speakers. I'll run the Creative Console Launcher (and other MS Vista diagnostics) to check on the levels of each speaker, and when the front left speaker is selected, sound comes from all the speakers, same for the front right speaker, but when the center speaker or rear speakers are selected only the subwoofer makes a sound. A recent development is that the quality of the sounds are getting worse -- sounds go in and out on music played from iTunes -- direct from teh CD or mp3 files.
When it started to occur: not sure, but within the last couple of weeks most likely.
What I have tired:
new speaker system -- no change.
using input wires in different configurations (front speakers in rear speaker slots, etc.) -- no sound was the usual result.
updating the driver -- ended up with no sound after installation and reboot, I have reverted back to the original driver.
disabling/uninstalling hardware -- no change after reengaging the hardware.
diagnostics software -- all variations (Fix it, original windows diagnostics, creative diagnostics) believe the audio driver is working fine.
Thanks for Reading.

Have you tried using the HP Hardware Diagnostic tool that came with the PC? (Click Start > Help & Support > Troubleshooting Tools > Audio Test)
Also, here is an HP Support Video that explains how to resolve most audio issues.
I hope this helps. Let us know how it goes.

I have a similar Creative sound card.
Go to start, all programs, creative, and click Creative Software Update and get those updates form online then reboot.
Also on the bottom right of the desktop next to clock, where you have your tray icons, right click on the white speaker icon chosoe Playback Devices, then make sure Speakers are selected as default device (must have green check mark) and then rightclick on Speakers choose Properties, and select 5.1 configuration, go next, make sure Sattelite Speakers is checked, go next and FINISH. Then rightclick on Speakers and test. Should work.
Also make sure you have the cables in the back of the pc properly.
Green= front speakers out
Orange= center speakers/sub woofer
Black= rear speakers
Grey= side speakers (used in 7.1 configurations only)
Blue/Pink= microphone in/line in
Also, if you haven't done so already, reboot the pc and go into the F1 or F10 BIOS menu and disable onboard audio since you're using a pci-e x1/pci sound card and we don't need Onboard enabled.
Also, DON'T use Windows Update to Update sound card drive. It can mess it up.
Always rightclick and hide those WDM/Creative/Realtek audio driver updates form vista.
Use only the creative website and the Creative Software Update.
Sorry for the long descriptions but hopefully this should help you or someone out there.
