If you connected headphones into the front and the speaker icon was still unavailable, then it sounds like the motherboard is unable to perform jack detect.
If it were me, I would give it one last go before returning it. I would unplug all the sound connectors and turn the computer off.
With it off, I would plug the headphones into the lime green line-out on the BACK of the PC and turn the computer on.
Then, I would look at the volume icon and make sure all was up and not muted. Would go back into Sound properties and try to get into the Configure and Properties settings to make sure the level are up and not muted.
If I couldn't do these things after all that, it's gotta be replaced.
Please post rather than send me a Message. It's good for the community and I might not be able to get back quickly. - Thank you.

Torben Holk : No error messages!
Torben Holk : Just no sound!
Torben Holk : Got a brand new PC with brand new speakers - Logitech Z-5500's
Apurva : Okay.
Torben Holk : The PC shows sound's okay, but there's nothing coming outa the speakers.
Torben Holk : Tried a different setup (still 5.1)
Torben Holk : Then another one ( 2).
Apurva : If I understand the issue correctly, we are not able to get any sound from the speaker, Am I correct?”
Torben Holk : None worked, though they ALL work on my old PC
Torben Holk : YES
Torben Holk : I'll aloow remote desktop, if it is
Apurva : Torben, we don't have authority to take remote control of the computer.
Apurva : I will certainly do everything possible, to help you resolve the issue.
Torben Holk : How do we fix that? The last guy I talked to, could, but we had a hard time communicating due to a language barrier
Torben Holk : Okay! Cool! Now what do I do?
Torben Holk : Hello?
Torben Holk : Hmm........
Apurva : I am personally committed to take care of this for you. What e are going to do is attach the speaker and configure the speaker.

Torben Holk : 0
Apurva : May I have the product and serial number of your system?
If you are chatting from the same system, the best and fastest way to pull up this information would be via pressing the CTRL + ALT + S keys at the same time.

Apurva : And after that please click on control panel.
Torben Holk : Done

Torben Holk : I SAID IT ISN'T POSSIBLE!
Apurva : Okay,
Apurva : Please tell me is there any check mark on the speaker on sound window?

And to make HP look worse...
I spent another hour (1:17:08) with "William" (who actually spoke perfect US English) trying to test my PC left 'n right, but again - to no avail. He finally agreed with me, that there's got to be somethig wrong with the onboard sound. He gave me SO ticket # and told me to call it in, so HP can have it shipped. When I called the #, they refused, telling me they need to test it a little more, before accepting it. <text deleted> Sorry HP (not really), but at least I'm still not cussing on this site!
So all in all I've had this problem since June '08. Been in hours of chat sessions. Spent hours on the phone. And STILL htey won't accept they may have a bad part in my PC. By now I'm thinking they're just trying to draw out time, so my warranty expires (already been asked twice if I'd like to buy an extended waranty!). Hewlett/Packard/Compaq is a joke!!!! I will never again buy as much as copi paper with yourname on it! You should be ashamed of your lousy customer service!!!!!!!
Gotta go; running to Sam's Club to get my money back! Good luck to everybody else with a problem like mine!

Ok so based the steps done and screenshots provided the sound ports/jacks in the back for the onboard sound appear to be bad because when u normally plug in the green audio out cable it should says Speakers working under the Playback Devices.
I had this problem before as well even after Running a Recovery and reinstalling Windows and spending hours on it.
I came to the conclusion that the onboard sound simply isn't working.
It won't allow you to select Speakers as the default playback device because it says not working/not plugged in even though they are.
So as much as I hate to say you should get a replacement pc or unless you wanna buy a pci or pci-e x1 sound card to use instead.
Or if it's under warranty HP should take the computer and replace the motherboard and this way u have a brand new motherboard with a sound card that should be working.

Pretty much what I'm doing. HP actually called me this morning and offered me to fix the PC (they might actually have realized I had given up on their shotty customer service). Whe I OK'd it, they changed AGAIN, saying they wanted to do some more over-the-phone tests. I told them to shove it! Told them, if we hang up without them acknowledging a pickup, I was completely done with them. Once again they admitted the MOBO's most likely bad. They're FINALLY picking up the PC.
STILL...I've learned my lesson: I will never buy another HPproduct again!
