Distorted sound hp m8517c desktop

Hp desktop model m8517c windows vista home premium 64 bit when playing audio or video files through media player or on webpages the sound is distorted at various times.

I have tried uninstalling then reinstalling the sound drivers and the problem still exists, i have downloaded the drivers realtek provides and still the same problem exists. Everything else seems to work fine on the computer

The computer is new and  have even did a complete restore and problem still exists.

One thing to note when i was playing a video and refreshing my wireless connections in choose a network the video and sound slowed every time!

Any suggestions will help.

Re: Distorted sound hp m8517c desktop

If all other sounds are fine - say .. playing a DVD outside of WMP. Then the problem is most likely related to WMP or the enhancement settings. Web pages can use a WMP plugin to play video and sound.

If the sound distortion seems to occur randomly in any application - games, movies, itunes, etc... then you may have some sort of strange hardware/interferance problem going on - kinda like how cell phones can cause popping noises if they are put next to speakers.

Your wireless note doesn't suprise me. Certain system level functions can cause other applications to slow down until they finish processing. Just part of the multitasking environment.

Re: Distorted sound hp m8517c desktop

Thanks for the reply! The distortion occurs randomly and quite often.

I installed a new drive and put windows 7 64-bit beta and 2 different versions of linux and no problem whatsoever with sounds..

Could it be possible bad hard drive or bad dvd restore disks?

I am a loyal hp person but this is causing me to rethink that. Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

Hp total care support suggested updating driver then download k-lit codecs and same problem exists.

Thanks

Re: Distorted sound hp m8517c desktop

It sounds like you really know your stuff if you've swapped the hard drive. If the sound problem only occurs randomly with the original equipment drive and the original factory software build, then it could be one of several things (in my mind):

  • Bad drive or drive firmware not controlling voltage properly (being sent or received from/to the motherboard). You can isolate further by installing Win7 onto the original drive to see if it is related to the hardware.
  • Software build configuration issue. There is software on the original build that is not playing nice with something else. After you did a recovery, before installing any other software, did the sound problem exist? Or did the sound problem start after installing more software after the recovery - particularly sound/multimedia software - such as software related to DVD movies or CD copying?

Those are my thoughts. Of course, if you are in warranty, HP will service your PC as well. I'd be afraid though that may see it as no trouble found because the problem is intermittent.

Re: Distorted sound hp m8517c desktop

Thanks for all the great info! The computer is new two weeks old, it came with a dead hard drive, they sent new hard drive and a recovery dvd set.

I am going to install windows 7 onto the hp hard drive and see what happens, as well as install the hp recovery dvds onto a new hard drive and see what happens as well and will update after that is done!

Thanks so much!

Re: Distorted sound hp m8517c desktop

I had a similar problem with my Slimline s5330la with Win7.  It started as soon as I took it out of the box.  Any media file sounds distorted with a very annoying intermitent "buzz".  Updating the BIOS (to V5.07) and reinstalling the Realtek HD Audio driver didn't help.  HP support changed the machine (it was 2 days old) and sent me a brand new one........with the SAME problem!!!!!!  I just installed it and it has the same distortion.  I've been on the phone with HP support and they have no clue on what is happening.

I suspected that it was not a "sound" problem since when a song is being played with the HP MediaSmart program and the title of the song appears on the screen, the name of the song "jumps" and "freezes" at the same time as the distortion appears as if the machine got some kind of interference.

After checking the latency of my PC with "DCP Latency Checker" (www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml) I realized that the problem was not the sound driver but the wireless driver.

Disabiling the 802.11n Wireless PCI Express Card Lan Adapter "corrects" the problem.  This was not a solution given what without that driver you are off-line! However, at least it is more clear what the problem was.

I had version 3.0.1.0 (19/05/2009) of the driver by Ralink Technology.

HP has no updated driver for that component on their website but I found newer driver on RALINKTECH web.

I downloaded the 3.1.0.0 version from www.ralinktech.com.   Installed it and the problem was solved.

Good luck.

Re: Distorted sound hp m8517c desktop

PLEASE CAN SOMEONE HELP.

I have 2X  HP M9565 Pavillion Elite PC running 64 Windows 7.

I have exactly the same problem with both my PC's

I have spent the last two weeks trying to find a solution to this problem. I dont really understand the previous post but think it may well be a similar problem with my PC's.

I have an intermittent distortion or "stalling" of both sound and vision with all media playback software.

I have loaded and unloaded programs to the services and startup in MSCONFIG but to no avail.

Please let me know where or how I get this version of the software I need and how to install it.

IN DESPERATION
