HP Pavillion a1700n - No sound. Control panel indicates sound is working.

Windows Vista

 

  • NOVICE!!
  • Connection method - cable/modem
  • Indications desktop was probably going to crash, such as:  multiple error messages while on internet - reading live.com, singsnap.com or whatever site I was attempting to go to, OR currently at, ... not responding,  screen fading, screen images multiplying behind each other, freezing ect.
  • Attempted, with help of Western Digital, to get a good backup.
  • Recent changes:  Unplugged WD Smartware Device (external backup), as instructed by Western Digital, due to computer no longer recognizing the unit when plugged in.  Per Western Digital, unit now defective. 
  • Prior to last attempt to backup, Sound was operational.
  • Problem:  two days ago I lost Sound
  • Trouble-shooting:  went to Control Panel - Sound and it indicates sound is working.  What should I try next?

  • Issue still unresolved.

I think while I was away someone used PC and disconnected something.  What should I look for?  Don't even know where speakers are.
