How do I get my sound back?

Some people shouldn't be allowed near technology - I'm near the top of that list.

 

I have an a1008.uk desktop which needs some care and attention. I changed out the monitor (with integrated speakers) for a flat screen with no speakers, assumed I could just plug in external speakers and get terrific audio. Seems I can't.

 

Sound is echoey and distant. I just want to know how I can enjoy full audio again - particularly as the kids can't use their websites as the instructions are mostly audio based.

 

Any help very much appreciated.
