Lost Sound

I acquired an HP Pavilion a1710n desk top computer running Windows Vista service pack 2.  It has no sound. 

I tried uninstalling the audio driver & reinstalling without success.  I have also restore the computer back to the factory defaults and there is still no sound.  The driver is:

Realtek High Definition Audio

Version 6.0.1.6278

Dated 12/30/2010

 If I open the speaker icon in the task tray when playing the Windows media player can see the equalizer showing activity but there is no sound.

I opened the case and it appears there is no separate sound card. 

My question is, has anyone had this issue and how did you resolve it?

If there is no solution, could I add a sound card if the existing sound is intergrated into the motherboard?

I lost laptop audio.  Speaker has red X.  I was cleaning up apps and must have killed something.
